We have all sorts of happy news around here lately… first of all, Ch. Logres’ Contender has been bred to Ch. Marquis’ Yes I Am Bewitching (a.k.a. Bella). Bella is the littermate to Marley (a.k.a. BIS Ch. Marquis Yes I Am). Bella is owned by Joan Earley and Linda and Kelly Marquis.

The pregnancy is not yet confirmed, but we are thinking it’s a "yes" just by looking at the gleam in Contender's eyes. And the look on Bella's face is priceless! Tina took these photos of Bella and Contender.

All is well, WhelpWise says she's had a few contractions, but is not in labor... and the fetal heart beats are strong. We think we hear seven puppies... but that can be off slightly. So, nothing really to report yet. :)

I have a few thoughts on WhelpWise that may benefit other breeders … but there is something absolutely beautiful that happened this morning that I thought I’d share. At this point Bella is not any too interested in her puppies… not exactly sure if her maternal instincts will kick in, but at the moment they haven’t. Claire’s, on the other hand (paw), are in over-drive. She was very concerned about the Bella's puppies. This morning by about 10:00 am it was clear that Bella’s puppies needed a good drink and some stimulation… so we put them (a few at a time) on Claire… to fill their tummies and get their digestive systems going. Claire treated each as if it were her own. Here are photos of Claire with two of Bella’s kids, and her son DiMaggio… what I love about Lil’ Claire is that she saw a need and stepped up to offer what she could…
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/Claire-dimag.jpg
Btw, what you can not see in the photo is that Bella's puppy is actually trying to push DiMaggio out of the way.

These photos are from this morning… as you can see, Bella is coming around beautifully.:) The litter is very doing very well.:) I love the look in her eyes this morning, especially as compared to yesterday! I think that as Bella’s milk comes in over the next day or so she will be prove to be an excellent mom, she just needed a bit of support at first, and then some time to connect to what her new "job" is about.
I haven’t had much time to do more than run... but I am finding a wonderful rhythm, so it will all get easier as the days go by. At the moment, "It's All Good." :) I should mention, Arthur is working nights. He worked Sunday evening up in Winston-Salem (from 5:00 pm Sunday night till about 7:00 am Monday morning), then drove down here to see the puppies (2 hours each way)… spent the day with them and then drove back to Winston-Salem in time to take a shower and get to work at the hospital at 5:00 pm Monday evening.

Elaine, did you put any of the larger puppies on Bella? It will help if she has any problems with milk production.
Actually Andy, while that may work in some situations, it would absolutely not have worked with Bella, for a variety of reasons. While DiMaggio and his siblings are sweet mellow puppies, their size alone would probably scare the holy bejeezus out of most new mothers.:p
Here is the update, by Wednesday morning things were going south for Bella and her puppies. The vet who did the docks and dew claws on the litter (on Wednesday) did a thorough postpartum exam of Bella. She was absolutely fine, normal temp, etc, but she had absolutely no maternal instincts at all, and even with tube feeding, her puppies were not thriving.
Since Claire is in superb condition, we all agreed that in the best interest of the puppies, Claire should take over the litter (if that were possible). At that point we were not 100% certain that Claire would take to them. For the first 12 hours, Claire nursed them simply because I was asking… and sitting with her in the whelping box. But now Claire is totally devoted to the litter. And even better, sweet beautiful Bella is now home with Joan, healthy, happy and sleeping on the couch, enjoying life. Bella is a precious beautiful Dobe, but motherhood was simply not for her. She gave her puppy’s the gift of life… with Lil'Claire's help, we can carry the ball from here.
These are the puppies from this morning.

Each and every dog is precious, but I must say, Claire simply amazes me. That moment Wednesday evening when she laid down to allow these puppies to nurse was just about the greatest gift ever.
Those who know Lil’ Claire know she plays by her own rules… and always has. She is very strong willed. You simply can not force Claire (or any bitch) to take over another litter. And any bitch doing this (so soon after their own litter), has to be in excellent condition. Claire is in glowing health. Still, she had to agree to this, or it would never have happened. In the beginning seven hungry puppies were a bit overwhelming to her... but she was willing to try because I asked her. Now she tends the puppies on her own.
Considering what a free spirit Lil Claire is, it's amusing how much of a disciplinarian she is with her kids DiMaggio, Capricia, Hotline and Diarado. She is very sweet with them, and extraordinarily attentive, but she does not tolerate any rough stuff from them. As a result, they are very gentle with her and respectful. All in all, they are about the sweetest, most mellow puppies I’ve ever seen, a complete and total joy. Even now as they transition away from nursing, she still goes in and cleans them and just lays with them… and when they are out and about in the kitchen she is attentive to what they are doing.
Awwww, bless lil Claire's heart - who knew she had it in her?
The babies are all doing okay then? They look very content. I hope Claire is getting plenty of extra special treats for all this work :)

SO far, Claire is in great shape... the CBC kids are growing by the minute, they are walking. Their older cousins all have the world figured out... they follow me all around, watching, fascinated, enthusiastically involved in ever single thing I do. At this point they’ve seen and heard just about everything in the house, and they've been into just about everything. They want to see everything and be part of it. They will sit by the whelping box when I'm feeding the CBC kids, waiting their turn for a squirt of formula... like a bunch of kittens lined up while the farmer is milking the cow. It's very cute.
There's a cycle 'round here, as the T.V. character Monk would say, "They eat and then they play and un-eat." At the moment they've had breakfast, done what they need to do, and are now taking an early morning nap.
Btw, I sorta thought that the look in Claire's eye in the last photo (which I copied here below) was saying, “There’d better not be a third litter around here somewhere!”

Elaine you are so lucky to have her willing to be a mom the second time around. She has to have a great temperament.
Question. Since birth mom wasn't cut out to be a good mom this time, what do you think her chances are of doing a better job the next time, that is if there is a next time with her? She certainly had a nice sized litter with no issues having them and that is a plus.

We do not own Bella, so we have no say in whether she is bred again, but this is not her first litter. Apparently she was about the same with the previous litter, possibly a bit worse this time. As for there being no issues having the puppies, that is not accurate. We almost lost the first puppy (I had to race Bella to the Emergency Room at midnight to save puppy #1). In all there were eight puppies, but we lost puppy #7.

I guess I didn't realize she lost the first pup. I also didn't realize it wasn't her first litter. So you were watching for how she was with the pups. I was wondering if sometimes they are better at motherhood when they get older? But I guess just like people, some women are not meant to be mothers either....Guess she was one of them. I didn't realize she wasn't yours until you said you sent her back. She sure is a pretty bitch. It is fun watching all the pups grow up, all the different litters.

Bella did not loose the first puppy, she lost the seventh puppy (out of eight total)... so, of eight puppies, one puppy, who was #7 in the birth order, did not survive.

I am going to take a huge leap here and guess that Kelly and Linda are busy on the Florida circuit, and are not on line much. As for Joan… I know she reads DSNN…. she may join us soon :) and she may email me about a theme she and the Marquis’ have come up with.
Tina and I were trying to come up with a theme that relates to both Contender and Bella… (who is registered as Ch. Marquis’ Yes I Am Bewitching). Contender is Ch. Logres ‘ Contender.
As you may know, in my opinion, Dobermans should all be named after German Warmblood Sporthorses, but oddly, the rest of humanity does not share this view. :p:o:(:cool:
Contender was named after the stallion Contender, who is the Oldenburg Stallion of the Century and one of the founders of the “C” line for the great Holsteiner jumpers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxFbbIY539s&feature=related http://www.germanhorseconnection.com/main.php/en/details/00576
http://www.horsemagazine.com/BREEDINGBARN/GREAT_STALLIONS/contender/contender.html http://www.greenacres-stud.com/contender.htm I like the names Ladykiller and Calypso (both great stallions in his pedigree)
IF you Google Contender, most of the references are to boxers. It is a bit of a challenge to combine the meaning of the name Contender (i.e. “to be in contention for a top prize”) and “Yes I Am Bewitching.” Maybe some of you creative people can think of something.
Hmmmmm. Bewitching top prize competitors. Makes me think of a Harry Potter spell competition :D
I think some super groovy call names for the girls would be Samantha, Endora, Esmeralda, Tabitha...

Arthur, Steph (my daughter) and I love the Harry Potter books… loved them. :) Until I looked at this list above, I would have thought there were many many really good names among the characters… but after reviewing this list, I can’t seem to find any. :o

Well, trying to photograph seven active puppies is proving to be considerably more difficult than photographing 4. :D It’s a bit like trying to corral a group of fish… they each go their own way, they are never looking at the camera at the same time, or, if they are… the photo is too dark to use. :o They are only two weeks old, I do not want to stress them… so this is what we have. I can tell you that they are very sweet, and from what I can see, they are very nice. I think the cross of Monty daughters to Brentina sons is a good one. :)

Though she is busy elsewhere, Bella remains a very thoughtful mom. Recently she sent her kids some gifts, which they loved. Since they are still too young to work the Iphone, they wanted “Thanks Mom, and Joan!” in these photos.

Athy,
I thought there was a photo or two that would touch your heart. :)
Btw, just as a reminder, this beautiful litter belongs to Joan Earley and Kelly and Linda Marquis. Bella lives with her mom Joan Earley, who has recently joined DSNN. Joan may post here soon. By way of background, Joan is an Irish Setter person, well known and respected in Setters, and now fiercely devoted to rescue, both cat rescue and dog rescue. Joan is one of those who devotes her time and resources to trying to solve the problems created by irresponsible pet ownership. Arthur and I are proud to call her a friend and deeply awed by her commitment on behalf of animals.
Our respect for Kelly and Linda Marquis is well known. Arthur and I are thrilled that they chose to use Contender for Bella and we think this breeding will prove to be an excellent blend of bloodlines.
Should also mention that Tina Nett had a huge hand in making this litter possible. Contender lives with Tina. Tina and her husband Jeff actually did the breeding and were fantastic in a million and one ways. This litter is surrounded by many loving and devoted Dobe lovers.

Thank You Elaine for those kind words. I am loving seeing Bella's kids in your great pictures. As you know I have been reading the DSNN website for a while now, and feel like I know many of your members. The puppies look amazing, thanks to you and Claire. Bella wants to make it clear that the toys are to be shared with their older brothers and sister.

Hi Cheryl + Bob- thanks for the warm welcome. I feel like I know you guys, since I have been following your dogs for a while now. Just beautiful. Love the snow pics (but glad there is no snow here in Alabama)- Cheryl, you posted a comment about Lorges boys being a good match with Monty's girls, so I did some investigating to find out who your dogs were. And yes you were right !!!

We are supposed to get a nice warm up this week and next. :D

Hi Cheryl
I know what you mean about being ready for some warm weather. Even though I am in Alabama (way down south near FL) it has been unbelievably cold here. My outside faucet froze and I had to have the plumber today to fix the damage. But I am not complaining, since it was 9 degrees in the Boston area, which is where I lived my whole life b4 moving to Alabama 5 yrs ago. I moved down here and then found Bella in New Hampshire- it was meant to be! BTW when I first went on Elaine's website to see the dog Bella was going to be bred to, I saw your boy and said OMG !! I do love the black boys. And that puppy photo of him is sooooo adorable. What a face !!!!

I did the same thing when I was told by a friend to go check out the black puppy dog on Elaine's site. My heart skipped a beat when I saw his beautiful face and head!
He has only gotten better with age. Vaako has matured into a very special dog. He always had that special spark......it grows better and brighter with the maturity that comes for a male at 3 yrs old.
We feel very lucky to have this guy in our lives.
Emma has her father's lovely face and expression. Her soft dark eyes make you melt.
Vaako and Emma together made for some really amazingly beautiful heads and expression.
My family is in Maine and VT. My oldest sister in Stowe and brother John in Greenville, Maine.
I would love to be in VT, but the -40 below wind chills make it just a bit hard to deal with. Nothing though can take your breath away like waking up to a view of Smuggler's Notch!
I am trying to get Bob to move to Va. A bit warmer and far less snow!! LOL!
I guess I am getting old!

Hi Joan,
I thought I would introduce myself also and welcome you to the forum.:)
My little girl is Layla, Bella's sister from the repeat breeding of Envy and Monty.
I have been watching those little pups from when the first pics were posted.. They are beautiful...and these last pics are priceless.
Those little puppy faces are to cute.
I must check this thread about 5 times a day waiting for more and more photos. Elaine is doing such a wonderful job keeping us all up to date on both litters.

I have had a bear of a time trying to post photos lately… part of the problem is this wireless Logitech keyboard… it is horrible… keys don’t work, it drops letters… this is the second Logitech product we’ve purchased. Arthur just threw away the other Logitech keyboard we bought… we would not buy another Logitech product. Anyway, this is the black boy… and I suspect that Joan has been waiting to see his beautiful face.

These guys are just about the sweetest puppies we’ve ever had the pleasure to know. Each is a precious and unique individual. Lilly can out think any ten people you know, she is a star, and she knows it!!! JJ is almost the male version of Lilly. Suri and Harlow are playful clowns. Jewels is amazing. It has been a privilege to have shared this part of their life. For the past week they have been with Tina, learning about life in a new household, with young children. (We can call Tina the "NEW CLAIRE." ;):D I can speak to what they were like from the moment of birth, Tina can tell you every nuance of their personalities as they bloom each day. We love this litter. They will be cropped by Dr. Edwards on March 2nd and 3rd.

Elaine - the puppies look great. I just got home from an out-of-town job, which would have been fine, except I came down with a horrible head cold the night before I left, so I have been feeling miserable. These little guys really put a smile on your face. I told Rip that some day we will have a pretty little girl come live with us and he can have someone to play with. The French Bulldogs are like playing with a bowling ball with little short legs. He just doesn't understand why they can't keep up with him. Thanks for sharing. Paula

Here are some photos of the litter at 14 weeks. It's been a while since we've seen these puppies and I thought you all might enjoy seeing how they are coming along. The handler in the photos is Joan Earley... I believe that many of the puppies are spoken for... but a few might still be available. YOu should contact Joan or Kelly and Linda Marquis. Overall I think this was a very nice litter. And yes, the black boy is missing from these photos. He is living in Ohio with his new mom, who will no doubt post photos in the near future. :)

Elaine - What beautiful babies. I'm sure you are the very proud grandma.
Who did the ears? Paula
Elaine
04-06-2010, 10:12 AM
Dr. Patty Edwards did the ears. She did an extraordinary job. I have seen other photos of the ears on this litter, with their tapes off, and the ears are absolutely beautiful. At her best, there is none better than Dr. Edwards.
I want to clear up a few things here. We do not own this litter and are not the breeders of this litter. This litter is owned and bred by Joan Earley and Kelly and Linda Marquis. They deserve the credit for this BEAUTIFUL litter. Most especially Joan Earley, who has gone above and beyond every step of the way for this litter, deserves a boat -load of credit. Joan has been amazing in every possible way, I can not say enough good things about her and her love of Bella and this litter. Our tiny tiny contribution ended at 6 weeks.
One other thing I want to add… about the litter itself. We are tremendously proud of the quality of this litter and how it reflects on both the sire - Ch. Logres’ Contender (whom we co-own with Tina Nett) and the dam - Ch. Marquis Yes I Am Bewitching (who is owned by Joan, Linda and Kelly). We have always felt that Contender had a lot to offer to Monty daughters, and we are seeing proof of that in this litter. These two beautiful champions complimented each other very well. I think this breeding combination really clicked, producing excellent puppies. The photos speak for themselves. If we had no other Dobermans, I would buy Harlow in a heart beat… or Marquis… or Asia (who has been a star from very early on). And Tina has a black boy in Ohio from this litter that is pretty special too. I can't wait to see these kids in the ring in the future.

Just so there is no confusion... that is Kelly MArquis in the photo with Harlow. Far as I know, Harlow (and the red boy we called JJ) are owned by Kelly and Linda Marquis.
And, though no one has (or will) asked, ;) based solely on phenotypes, I’d do this kind of breeding with Harlow in a heart beat. She has all the front you’d ever want, but she could be a bit stronger in the croup (though in this photo you don’t reaaly see that, and it may just be a stage with her).
http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab34/arthurgreenwood/Titus--Harlow.jpg
I guess I should mention that the red dog above is Titus, a.k.a. UKC Ch. Logres' Contucci http://logresfarm.com/Logres'%20Contucci.htm I went back and added about a dozen photos to his page that we took of Titus about a year ago.

It’s been a while since anyone posted to this thread… here is an update. Joan Early (who co-owned Bella with Kelly and Linda Marquis), died of cancer early this year. Far as I know, the black boy Malachi is doing well living with Tina and Jeff in Ohio, the red boy is in Florida, Harlow (who's mom is a meber of DSNN) just won her first point[s] today. :D Last fall, when Joan got sick Lilly came back into our lives, she stayed with us for a while before she found a wonderful loving forever home with a gentleman who lives in Wash. Her owner (Pre Lilly) spent some time with a whole lotta dobe owners at our Santa photo shoot. Super nice young man. Can you imagine spending an afternoon with about 20 dobe owning woman all in one room on a Sunday afternoon??? lol.

Not sure you can ever say this kind of thing often enough, but Kathleen is a very very special person and a very very very special friend of the Dobe. Though Kathleen has no direct involvement with this litter in any material way, shape or form, she was right there to step up for Brian, Lilly's new owner, to be a local source for him and the thousand and one questions he had.... and continues to have. They say it takes a villiage... and it does. Or, it takes a few special people like Kathleen, who give of their time simply because they are beautiful, generous, loving people who love this breed. Thank you Kathleen. I suspect that somewhere Joan thanks you too. It's pretty clear from how Lilly acts that she was loved by Joan. I suspect that Tina noticed this when she had Lilly. It is a wonderful feeling to know that Lilly is now with Brian :)
