I am very excited about this litter. Lil Claire is a Ch. Logres Tungsten daughter out of a full Sister to MBIS Ch. Cambrias Victoria Secret. They will compliment each other very well.

Reminds me of a Thanksgiving card I received one year. The outside of the card read,

Henny Penny, Duckie Lucky and Lucy Goosie all wish you a "HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!"

inside read "Turkey Lurkie says go to hell!"

so there you go.....Penny, Lucky, Lucy and Turkey!!! :p:eek::D

Very funny Tina, but no. :cool:

okay, we can add Plucky and Creamed Corn...

So, now there’s:
Gobble Gobble,
Turkey Waddle,
Herb Stuffing,
Creamed Corn,
Plucky
and,
Lil’ Cluck ... but six is the limit

but who am I fooling? .. they're all gonna be named after German Warmblood Sporthorses anyway...

She is adorable! I love her little face...she seems to be saying " WTF!"

I found Emma was just the most interesting little creature on the planet for me when she was chubby and carrying all those " buns", as Bob likes to call them :).

I am excited for puppies and thrilled to death I am not the one whelping them! HA!

Those pictures are so cute, although she looks slightly uncomfortable. :-)

I am sure everything is going to go perfectly, and she is going to have nothing but healthy champions!

Lil’ Claire had four puppies by c-section this morning, November 27, 2009. There are two black girls, a black boy and a red boy.

Claire is still at the vets’ with the puppies and Arthur. All are well. I will post more later.

The family is home... all is well. Dr. Turner at Small Animal Emergency Services did a fabulous job. Claire just had a light breakfast and is napping. The kids are eating and dozing off. Each is over a lb. I swear, the red boy, Logres’ Diarado is his dad all over… maybe a tad shorter backed. He was climbing out of the box at the vets, he's pushing his siblings off of nipples... he's a little Bruiser. And one of his sisters - Logres’ Capricia is the spitting image of him (in a black female package, but s-m-o-o-t-h as glass). I don't really have impressions of the other two kids yet except that Logres' Dimaggio and Logres' Rivita are rather polite... and sweet. They must take after Grandpa. :p

Btw, doing a C-section on Claire was a judgment call… I want to share our experience here so that others may have this data… which may prove helpful in an emergency. Claire was at day 58 (from the one and only insemination). Claire had been in labor for a few hours, having strong contractions, but labor was not advancing (i.e., it was not productive). At about 2:00 a.m. we made the choice to take Claire to the Emergency Vet for a C-Section. Claire's temp was normal, all outwards signs were good/normal, but her labor had not advanced. When we left for the vet, we were rather sure what the outcome was going to be (a C-Section), but we were open to the vet’s opinion.

The vet - Dr. Ann Turner – examined Claire and agreed that a C-section was a wise choice. During surgery we discovered that a part of the horn had turned over on itself… and there was a partially formed puppy (a fifth puppy) stuck in the horn. This puppy was not properly formed and would not have been viable under any circumstance. It would not have been possible for Claire to deliver any of the puppies vaginally. There was also a tiny bit of infection … NOTHING GOOD would have come from waiting... we could have lost the litter and Claire. At the time we made the decision to do the C-Section there was really no way to be sure that surgery was the right choice. As I said, it was a judgement call on our part. In hindsight (which is always perfect), we made the right call, and have four healthy puppies. We are appreciative of Dr. Turner and her staff, they gave us good medical options, supported our decision and took excellent care of Claire.

I took this photo at about 3:00 a.m. this morning, it is not the kind of photo I’d usually post, but I thought you might like to see it. Diarado is showing here what I think breeder’s look for in a puppy of this age… bone, short backed…

Tina's heard what is about to follow about a zillion times, but people often ask where we get our names. In addition to the Dobermans, we import semen and breed Pinto Oldenburg Sporthorses... using the top stallions from Germany. Oldenburgs are a German breed. So, we name our Dobermans (a German Breed) after top German Warmblood Sporthorses, either Olympic competitors or FEI level competitors… or influential stallions and mares. In this linked video (of the 2009 Oldenburg Stallion presentation) you will see some young stallions by stallions who’s names we’ve used, incluiding Dimaggio and Hotline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTSc0IU4doo

Btw, in Warmbloods the convention is to reference a horse’s pedigree by only the males, which is how Arthur listed the Warkant – Claire puppies above ... i.e., Warkant/Tungsten/ Secret Desire. The thought behind listing an animal's pedigree this way is that knowledgeable people get an accurate idea of the conformation and ability of the given animal because they are aware of the characteristics that given stallion is prepotent for. So Warkant / Tungsten/ Secret Desire would immediately call to mind a specific structure and ability. Mares have much fewer offspring and it is much more difficult to visualize what any given mare is prepotent for.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/11-30-09-the-kidsII.jpg

About the c-section, at the time we committed to doing it, it was not "medically necessary." We did not know that the horn had twisted and we did not know that the one puppy, though pretty much full size, was not viable (his/her organs were all outside the little body, there is no way that puppy could have been saved). At one point Dr. Turner, Arthur and I discussed giving Claire a shot of oxytocin… to see if it would bring on a stronger contraction, which – in hindsight – would have been a complete disaster. We opted to go right to surgery and Dr. Turner was in complete agreement. I should mention, Dr. Turner does lots of C-Sections and her knowledge and expertise were very valuable. Had we been at another vet's, or had we read things differently, we could just as easily have decided to wait another 12 – 24 hours, which again – in hindsight- would have been a complete disaster for the four healthy puppies and for Claire. We made a judgment call, and it turned out to be the right choice, but honestly, there was no way to know that in advance. I know of breeders who have made the other choice, and waited, only to have c-sections days later with no living puppies (and huge vet bills). Their experiences may have swayed me towards doing the c-section sooner rather than later (so at least something good came of their tragedies, and I am thankful that they shared their experiences).

We are all only human, we all do the best we can with the information we have. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we don’t… but 100% of the time we try. Bottom line, god was watching out for us and Claire, and we made the right choice… but it was really just an intuitive guess at the time.

… but it was really just an intuitive guess at the time.

And that's the key though. It's either gut instinct, an educated guess or a hunch. I think too often we don't rely on our own intuition enough. Thank goodness you all did.

Love the pictures - could you please send us a transmission of puppy tummy smell as well :D

Athy

andyhilt27

I would have made the same call. It would definitely be a better choice to regret a section than to regret having not done one.

We lost a puppy on Tabitha's first breeding due to me not acting on my intuition. A quicker decision would have saved a badassed little male. I know he would have been spectacular. Out of the womb (unfortunately dead) he was my first pick, Roscoe 2nd, and SuzieQ 3rd. But, Tabitha was not showing any distress what so ever. She wasn't showing any distress on her second litter either. I made the call to section her after a few hours of labor. It turned out to be the correct, call but we all know the sad end to this story.

I am a firm believer in following intuition. I am not claiming psychic abilities or disclaiming them either. But I have been bitten in the ass everytime when I haven't followed it.

As you can see, the kids had their tails and dew claws done yesterday. What a fantastic experience!!! :):):) The vet we used is just about the nicest vet I've ever met, professional, caring, skilled… if he wasn't already taken, I'd be totally in love.:D :rolleyes:;)

The visit was amazing from the first moment. He came out to the truck to get Claire. He examined Claire, weighed her, checked her over from head to foot... checked that her discharge was healthy, checked her mouth, checked her uterus… checked her mammary glands… did more of an examine than any vet has ever given any of my dogs. In fact, no vet doing a tail dock has ever even looked at the bitch, much less done a thorough examine.

Claire is fine, but she is starting to get a bit of a hip roll (aren't we all? :p:o:rolleyes:) so he asked that I watch that she not get pudgy. Then the vet examined each puppy... then he did the tails… did a beautiful job, though they are long. When it was done he walked the puppies out to the truck.

He did comment that the kids were very healthy, but a bit plump, oops!!! :D:rolleyes: and their size makes them appear a bit older than they are. He did the tails long (we felt that Claire's is a bit short), which may be perfect for them at maturity, or it may be something we need to address during the crop.

All and all it is so nice to finally have a great vet to use, who is not a frickin psycho. :cool: Apparently this vet does not accept new clients, we only got in because a friend called in a favor… so I can not give out his name here. I can say that it is a huge relief to have a vet to work with who simply does a terrific - professional job, without all the bs and drama of these other guys.

I’ve got to tell you, with only 4 puppies in the litter it feels like I’m cheating here. :D Claire and the kids are so healthy… she’s a loving devoted mom, yet she is perfectly okay with people she knows and trusts handling her babies… honestly, I’m barely doing anything at all. :p I’ve actually slept through the night the past two nights. :) I was just out doing errands, Claire was fine, the kids were fine… this is just too easy. When I think back to what Bob and Cheryl went through with their 9 puppies… or what I went through with Brentina’s litter’s and the other litters I’ve had (that all seem to average about 8 puppies), there is just no comparison. This is a walk in the park. :):):)

This is another idea I had yesterday... when at Lowes... I got a package of these foam interlocking squares (Less than $20), they are each 2' x 2' so the make up into one large 4' x 4' square, which fits perfectly in the floor of my whelping box. There are little ridges for traction (for the puppies), it's washable, it's cushion-y... it seems perfect... so in a few days I'll let you know what's wrong with it. :p

I think the thing that impresses me most about this vet is that he truly loves the dogs. Not only is he a skilled and talented professional, but he truly loves the dogs. I am so impressed, and so thrilled to finally have a vet like him to work with. :):)

I think its really tough finding a vet that we are confident and happy with.
I have had the same vet since 1991 and just cannot think about ever finding one I love this much.
His vet tech's are fabulous too which means alot to me as well.
All my dobes over the years have liked my vet too, and that means alot too.

The kids are a week old today…. :) So we had a party, here are a few photos of the reverie. :o :p;) Since their little eyes aren’t even open yet, they opted out of party hats, streamers and balloons. It was a pretty low-key affair. To be honest, most of the time it was hard to tell if they were awake or asleep, I suspect the latter. :rolleyes: :):):D:p Still, if you look, you can almost smell the puppy breath... and I love Diarado's little toes. :)

Arthur's had a busy week... he just noticed the most recent photos on this thread and mentioned that the photos here don't really show how big the kids are. I sort of agree, so I tried putting something in the photos with them that you can all relate to. The light in the room is not too bright at this time of day, and I did not want to bother them too much... so this is the best I could do... you can sort of get the idea... they are not small.:p

Thank you so much Elaine for taking the time to share your precious babies with us...I long for dober puppies in my house terribly..and watching these cuties every day makes it even harder for me.. I have not had a litter of dobes on the ground in over 25 years...Woops am I giving my age away.

Oh my am I enjoying these babies! I look several times a day as a form of stress relief!!
Want to share a few things I learned last night. Jeff was watching TV and called me to come see a program on National Geographic channel called "Dogs In The Womb". Program was comparing dogs of today to the original dog, "the wolf".
They showed puppies from 3 different litters in the womb with a 4D ultrasound imagery machine from conception to birth! Was a program I think every breeder would want to see.
Some of the highlights that I remember:
When the eggs are fertilized, the dam drops approximately 22 eggs to be fertilized. After fertilization, she evenly spaces the fertilized nodes in her uterus by contractions.
Some of the internal organs grow outside of the body, maybe only the intestines, not totally sure cuz this is where I came into the room. But they grow outside until the body is big enough to accomodate the organs and then they move inside.
Days 35 to 39 is when reabsorbtion can occur. Often due to stress.
One other thing I remember was about false pregnancies. In the original dog, the wolf, only the alpha female in the pack was allowed to have puppies. The other females would go through false pregnancies as a way to relieve hormone build up and also so that the other females could nurse the alpha bitches puppies if she needed to go on a hunt or something happened to her.
Somewhere at about 30 days the puppies actually start to pass urine into the amniotic fluid. That is why they are born with there eyes sealed so that the eyes are not damaged from the urine.
The last thing that I remember is that the genes that control pigment also control temperment.They actually said that the red gene produces more active dogs.
What was really cool to me was that I was able to see exactly what Bella's babies look like today!! :):)
What an absolute miracle gestation and birth is!!! :););)

The kids were flipping through the channels last night and caught a re-run of the Kennel Club Of Philadelphia show… where their idol C.J. had won the Group on November 14, 2009.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-6-09-the-kids-6.jpg

Like a lot of the kids of their generation, they are C.J. Groupies. They have her posters everywhere… she is their screen saver… it’s always “C.J. this” and "C.J. that.”

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-6-09-the-kids-10.jpg

So they watched for a while, mesmerized…

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-6-09-the-kids-4.jpg

but when the judge gave BIS to the Scottie the kids all lost interest and went back to sleep.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids6xx.jpg

For some reason Claire did not want her photo taken so she got up and walked away… which left the kids wondering what the heck had happened. Literally, one minute mom was there, the next minute she’s gone.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids7.jpg

They started looking around

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids9xxx.jpg

At one point DiMaggio thought he’d found a good substitute in his brother Diarado… but Diarado wasn’t having any of it..

Claire has been an extraordinary, loving, devoted mother so far, but I can see that she is starting to get bored with all of this. When she’s been out of the whelping box for a while, and they squeek, she will go and look at them, and then look at me as if to say, “ Do you want to feed them, or should I?” She is eating like a horse and seems more and more focused on food then on the kids. I can see this "Mother of The Year" thing coming to an end soon. :p:)

Anyone who’s had a litter knows that your life entirely revolves around them for weeks. To be honest… it’s not all that exciting. :p :rolleyes: Still, there are milestones… like when their eyes open, and when they start to walk. For me, one of the milestones is when the puppies outgrow the wicker basket I have for them (for when Mom is outside… and I want to keep them snuggled warm together).

Here are the kids in the basket tonight.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids10.jpg

As you can see, they barely fit anymore. And, as you will see, they are no longer happy staying in one place. This evening DiMaggio simply did not want to be in the basket. He tried climbing out at one end.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids14.jpg

Hotline joined him for a while...

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids13.jpg

but then she fell over onto Diarado and fell right back to sleep. Diarado never seemed to notice. :)

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-0-9-the-kids16.jpg

DiMaggio went over to another corner and crawled right out…

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-7-09-DiMaggio.jpg

and then went to sleep outside the basket.

Here is Tony… some of you may remember the Firestone’s German Sheppard Ch. Covy Tucker Hills Manhattan (who was for many years the All Breed Top Winning Dog of All Time). Tony worked for the Firestones, he job was merely to see that Manhattan and his son had whatever they desired.

It’s pretty clear that Tony loves dogs, and they love him.

You’ve pretty much nailed it… Claire likes Tony very much, and trusts him. All the dogs like him (heck, the horses like him too), and that says something very good about him. :) Dogs seem to be pretty good at figuring people out. Their “People Scan” is usually very accurate. :)

As part of a well-rounded education we’ve been trying to expose them to pop culture icons and classic child's literature. Lad was a favorite… other wise it’s pretty much same old / same old.

It’s almost like he's saying, “Go ahead, make my day.” :p I like the photo at the bottom of the previous page, of the two girls cradled in Arthur's hands.

I was noticing that Arthur does not have his wedding ring on. A few months ago he'd taken it off to do a surgery, and left it tied to his scrubs, which he put in the hospital laundry before going home for the weekend. :eek: A few hours later he noticed is was gone and called the hospital. I hadn't noticed it was missing. We were roasting marshmellows over a fire at about 11:00 p.m. .. having a lovely evening, when I heard him take a call from hospital security (returning his call). Some poor security man had to go through all the hospital laundry to find it… took hours... so now Arthur leaves his ring in a drawer. Anyway, that's his story and he's sticking to it. :D:rolleyes::cool:

Bob and I almost never wear ours at home.
I never go to work with it. I lost a diamond out of my band once and it is fairly dangerous to wear rings in my line of work.
I have seen injuries that include fingers being removed via wedding rings getting caught on stuff.
We both remove our rings at home. Puppies baiting get rings caught in teeth when they jump for it..... I loose them down drains....all kinds of stuff.

That is my story and I am sticking to it.......:)

Like all of us, I’m getting pretty used to multi-tasking. This morning I was on the phone with a friend, while trying to get a photo for our Christmas cards this year. I know, it’s late, but I’ve been later and still got them out.:rolleyes: Anyway, here are the kids, taken today… as you can see, they are precious angels… they’ve got the spirit, but for some reason I just can’t seem to get in the mood this year. I can’t even think of what to have the card say. Seems like I’ve said it over the years and at the moment I am in such a foul mood. I’m pretty sure people will object if the card says “eat shit and die” or Merry Elf’in Xmas.” :cool: Another friend was saying that I have to be sure to include the phrase “Merry Christmas” on the card, because she is tired of all these PC “Seasonal Greetings” cards that don’t use the word “Christmas.” So, for her I was considering having the card say nothing but Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas… :p:)

Halla is loving life with Betty… she is doing obedience (Halla, not Betty, Betty was already obedience trained :p). Plans are to show Halla next year… hopefully there will be some nice photos then. :):):)

As for Flip, next to Halla, she is one of my favorite bitches ever, but she has zero interest in being a show dog. We took photos of her a few months ago… not stacked, just her playing around, I’ll see if I can find any of them.

Been a bit busy round here these past few days, haven’t really had time to get good photos of the kids. While they still sleep a lot, they're growing more active and mature by the minute.

One problem with trying to get photos of them now is that if you come even remotely within range, they mob you… looking for nipples.

The approach is gentle at first… seemingly innocent sniffing… of a sock or part of your shirt… but pretty soon it’s a full on assault, looking for any soft tissue… anywhere… that might be a milk faucet.... which reminds me of the punch line of a joke, “There has simply got to be a nipple in there somewhere.”

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-21-09-kids5.jpg

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-21-09-kids2.jpg

Heaven forbid you make eye contact with them, they are so sweet, their gaze is hypotonic.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/12-21-09-kids3.jpg

They may be tiny, but they’re a determined mob, like in the final scene of the book Jurassic Park, where the doctor is eaten by dozens of little chicken-sized dinosaurs.

Not that I am a fan of Sesame Street , but Sesame place is right down the road from us. That is Bert getting his nose chewed on by the puppy. Bert has one eye brow, he became famous for it, or infamous. Actually when someone has a unibrow it is also called a Bert. Just for the record. Duh it is Bert!!!

Bert has a pointy head. That is Earnie!!! The eyebrow that you think you are looking at is Earnie's hair!! Earnie always dresses in orange with the stripped shirt.

Now let's see if Elaine won't put the babies with BARNIE...then we can really get down to Barnie bashing.

Elaine...PUT BARNEY THE OLE GUY IN WITH THE KIDS!!!

I think we may be talking about two different photos. The very first one where the puppy is chewing on Bert's nose is the one we are talking. The second photo where Elaine has labeled it "reviving Ernie", is obviously Ernie. What I am seeing is Bert getting his nose chewed on in the first photo, Yellow shirt, green pants. Maybe you are unable to see the first photo, but I am sure I am not confusing hair for that eyebrow. If you read my post it clearly points out the nose chewing which is not taking place in the "Reviving Ernie" photo.

Really it is not that important to me which stuffed animal is which, nor do I plan debating it further. I personally would like to see some of them playing with Oscar who is sitting behind Bert in the nose chewing photo or better yet attacking Cookie Monster.

Boy have you got that right, Capricia is a little doll, very much like Claire... :rolleyes: very out going and confident. :) She is curious about everything, and loves running around with my fuzzy pink slipper, which is huge compared to her.... it's very cute.

About the puppies at this age, we love what we are seeing at this age, Warkant certainly stamped his kids, which is all we can hope for. About the tails, I would like them shorter, which we will address here in the near future.

Btw, at this point we are training the kids to "use" the paper. It is going very well, but I want to give a HUGE shout out to BOB, who told me about this brown paper he got at Home Depot/ Lowes. It’s called Contractor's Paper, comes in rolls that are 35" wide and 140' long, for $10. The paper is fantastic!!! It’s clean, heavy, very absorbent... comes in a large quantity, you can tear it to whatever size you want... it's sort of like the heavy old grocery bags... doesn’t have the dirty ink of newsprint, nor the smell of newspaper. It’s perfect for paper training puppies. So, “Thank you” Bob, we owe you one!!! ;)

I look at these kids and see the progression from our foundation four generations back, with Kafka and Lizabeth, through their son and daughter (Tungsten and Brentina)… and the grand kids (Warkant and Claire)… and now the great grand kids in this current litter. I am pleased that we have a clearly defined breeding program… and I am pleased with the direction it’s going, within the context of the Doberman Breed Standard. I see improvement in each generation… which is of course the goal. So, for this moment in time, "It's All Good.":);)

Arthur

Obviously I am pleased with these photos, we bred the litter, and Elaine and I took the photos. Still, you won't see many photos from breeders that allow you to get an idea of the puppies conformation at 6 weeks and many puppies can't be stacked at that age without forcing them. When taking these photos we try very hard not to ask too much from the puppies. I would say each dog gets less than a minute of time on the table, we make sure they have good footing and something tasty, and then we put them back down to play. These puppies love the short session and think of it as a good thing.

6 week pictures are difficult to obtain, good pictures at 6 wks are even harder to get. I think Elaine and I look at these photos as part of our education. Breeders simply have to be able to evaluate the conformation of the puppies they produce. It helps to decide the course the puppy will take in life, either as a show dog or companion. We can look back at other litters and see in the 6 week puppy photo what we see in the adult.

andyhilt27

So what's your 6 week evaluation on each puppy at this point? Strengths, weaknesses, comments on movements, and anything else that camera can't/won't capture?

Beautiful puppies Arthur and Elaine, you should be very proud. Also great job with the photos, I know how tough it is trying to get stacked photos of 6 week old puppies.

Diadardo really jumped out at me when I looked at the photos. I am an outline guy and I really like the picture he makes. He's heavy boned and compact with nice angle. I especially like the combination of macho but still pretty.

Capricia looks very pretty and quite flashy. The length and fullness of DiMaggio's muzzle also grabbed my eye. Just a very nice looking litter.

I am anxious to see how these guys mature. I am also pleased to see Warkant produce the type of quality that his conformation and pedigree suggest he would.

Thanks Ron. (Now, do I make that check out to Ron’s Bahamian Get Away Fund… same off shore account as always?) :cool:

So what's your 6 week evaluation on each puppy at this point? Strengths, weaknesses, comments on movements, and anything else that camera can't/won't capture?

Andy, at this age we do not critique movement… it would be like doing wind sprints with an 8 year old. :o At this age, in a silhouette, I am looking at the fullness of the forechest (I want it deep to in front of the elbows). I look at the length and placement of the scapula and the length of the humorous, and how it sets under the puppy. I look at the top line, the loin connection… I look at the length and breath of the upper thigh, and the relationship of the upper thigh and the second thigh, and the metatarsus.

What does not show in the photos is how clean the dogs are when viewed from above, you can not see how high Diarado’s ear set is... you can not see temperment, and you can not see the ease with which they can be stacked properly.

I would like their feet to tighten up… and I would like less skirt on Hotline. At this age I am seeing everything I’d hoped to see from this breeding and more… so we are pleased. :)

If you look at Vaako’s kids, and now Warkant’s kids… and Contender’s kids (which we will have up in a few days) … it is pretty clear to me that the Trotyl – Brentina nick was excellent (although, not perfect). Off the top of my head I would say that Trotyl’s gift to his bitches is his superb bone, deep rich color, beautiful full mouths of large-strong-white-teeth, his strong, a beautiful outline… forechest and excellent upper thigh…and a ton of Doberman character. For all those and a zillion more reasons, we are indebted to Trotyl. In fact, as we look for the possible last breeding of Brentina, there are a few dogs we’ve loved, but I still wonder about a black version of DeNiro.

I was speaking with the owner of a stud dog we are very attracted to… and noted that when observing this breeder’s record over the past few generations there is a strong clear phenotype, that improves with each successive generation. The breeder has focused on making steady improvements in each generation while retaining the quality of her foundation… and she has done extremely well. But she does not go too far out from her foundation. I admire her approach, it is a type-to-type plan that is valued by most of the good breeders I know (either both the dogs and horses). In going to Trotyl we took a large leap of faith that an outcross would give us what we wanted… to then bring back to our foundation. That was a risk… which has paid off. I think it speaks to Trotyl’s value as a Doberman sire.

Rhetorically, any Trotyl sons with a pedigree similar to Ahb's spark your interest? That would make for some nice breedings down the road with what you have/will have.

I would go right back to Trotyl with Brentina if I wanted Trotyl... but I’d like to try more of a line breeding, so this time we're looking for a square, line-bred black male (with, for the sake of brevity, every attribute I value) AND a strong bottom line... and no Inaqui. The challenge is to find a strong bottom line... it is where most pedigrees utterly fail in my opinion.

Thank you for the drawings Michelle... and welcome to DSNN.

It’s really rather amazing when you consider the myriad of proportions that have to be in harmony to create a correctly built dog. Even more amazing are the breeding combinations necessary to produce “correct.” I think one of the most difficult challenges for breeders is to identify those dogs that are great breeding animals (i.e with some outstanding breed virtue), as opposed to merely being a successful show dogs… and then choosing the right combinations for each successive generation.

Learn the correct terminology… it will help you visualize the dog, help you understand form and function… and make it possible for you to correctly evaluate the dog in front of you. There are no short cuts to learning canine anatomy. If one has a passion for dogs, and wants to shown and later even consider breeding, then one simply must know and understand anatomy and correct terminology.

How's 'bout a glossary of said terms to help me and other novices viewing.
I know most of what to look for, just don't know the best way to describe it.

For starters, go to this link http://www.amazon.com/New-Dogsteps-Understanding-Through-Cineradiography/dp/0876055218/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1263902948&sr=8-2-fkmr2 and buy this book

and this one...

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/51YVCJY4MAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-a.jpg

and just for fun, then buy this one...

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/51YWDHG00CL__BO2204203200_PIsitb-st.jpg

and "yes" there will be a test

Someone's done a great job with a compass & a potractor - Makes me want to break my old Geometry box out. I don't mean to be picky but that circa 45 degree upper arm angle on hotline is not plotted on the same axis as the 90 degree angel

Andy I just jot down everything that Elaine says then take it to the GURU to translate- she's brilliant at making things seem simple and she drills you till you get it

Still haven’t gotten around to getting Hotline’s photo compressed for the internet… will try to get to it later tonight. [edited to add, on 1-29-2010 finally added a photo Hotline to the post above.) The kids keep me hopping… especially Capricia, who is the gang leader… she is a demanding little star… and she knows it. Hate to admit this, but she may be going to her new home just a tad bit spoiled rotten, :D:rolleyes: but I can’t help myself.. she is so endearing.

I was looking back at the observations I made when the kids were just barely a day old… thinking about how true some of my impressions have proven to be. For example: Diarado is absolutely a short backed version of his dad, with lovely bone and a beautiful top line, and DiMaggio is a mellow gentleman… and well, okay, I totally missed the boat with Capricia.. but two out of three ain't bad.:rolleyes::p:D

Here is a part of my post on the day they were born
The family is home... all is well. ... :p

and when they were two days old.
I took this photo at about 3:00 a.m. this morning, it is not the kind of photo I’d usually post, but I thought you might like to see it. Diarado is showing here what I think breeder’s look for in a puppy of this age… bone, short backed…

Well, it’s been a bit hectic ‘round here these past few days. DiMaggio, Diarado Capricia and Hotline are now cropped. The vet did a beautiful job… with tails, toe nails and ears, truly a beautiful job. Any of you who own cropped breeds know that cropping is a bit of a stress. I have had cropped breeds my entire life and so have my good friends. I know (or have seen the work of) most every cropper in this country at one time or another. AS you all know, there is a huge range of quality… from pet croppers to our Doberman breeder show croppers (who are – in my opinion, based upon my experience, about as unprofessional a group of “medical professionals” as I have ever come across. They are on the phone gossiping about your litter before you can even get out the drive way… they play childish games and I hear they can even intentionally ruin good puppies and in all, make things pretty miserable). And then there are true medical professionals (like the cropper Bob and Cheryl used), who simply do the best job possible with each and every puppy, regardless of its breeding, and regardless of who owns it or who bred it.

In the past two days we used a doctor who has been in practice many many years… he and his partner are breeders with an extraordinary reputation for superb quality. In all aspects of their lives, professionally and otherwise, they represent the very best of Dog People. They breed, own and exhibit absolute excellence… and nothing less. They have generations of Multi BIS and Multi National Specialty winners in about half a dozen breeds, including Irish Setters, IG’s, Bulldogs and Japanese Chins. They do not compromise quality, not ever! Good dogs, in successive generations, are not an accident. They are the result of careful consideration and very high standards IN EACH GENERATION. Joel and Ken do not go forward with anything less than the very best of the best (anything less is a waste of time and resources). They are the kind of dog people that inspire and challenge me. They make being in this sport worthwhile.

When Ken puts his hands on a dog… it is magic. He is one of the VERY few truly gifted handlers in our sport, and dogs seem to recognize it immediately. The picture he can make with a dog is absolutely thrilling. It is a joy for me to see him stack our dogs, it’s a joy to simply spend time with Ken and Joel, talking about great dogs, about what to value in a breeding program, about the nuances of soundness over “good movement,” over the essentials of “breed type.” In a lifetime one simply could not learn all they know. Ken has handled many many great dogs over the years, for himself and for some of the biggest names in dogs. At this point in his life, he shows only the dogs he and Joel breed.

Joel and Ken had a chance to go over each of our puppies… I will get back to what that in a moment.

I’d like to come back to the reason we started DSNN and the reason we are involved in dogs. My goal has always been to produce truly extraordinary dogs, not simply finishable dogs, but truly GREAT dogs, that combine extraordinary breed type and superb structure. This is not PET DOG News Network, Rather, the focus here is Showing dogs... which means we also discuss how to breed good dogs. One thing I would like to talk about, in a general way, is what we should be looking for in our puppies at eight weeks. So, we are going to have a new thread, we are going to use silhouettes of puppies… ones we’ve collected over the years… ones that have never been published on DSNN… just the silhouette. My hope is that we all train ourselves to better recognize and hopefully value “correct” over “ “not worth going forward with.”

About our Warkant – Claire litter… Warkant is an absolutely phenomenal dog, with outstanding virtue, which has been apparent from the very beginning. He was the outstanding puppy from his litter, which is apparent from day one. Warkant took a reserve to a 5 point major from the 6-9 puppy class on his first weekend out, he finished in about 6 weekends of showing, on the Florida Circuit, from open, at 13 months, with 4 majors and four major reserves. Warkant’s outstanding virtues include his bone and substance, beautiful under line to his neck, superb shoulder assembly, the beautiful flow of neck into shoulders, strong level topline, beautiful length and breath of femur, correct strong second thigh. A major consideration in breeding Warkant is that we felt strongly he had outstanding virtues that would be of value. We bred him to our Ch. Logres’ Tungsten daughter Claire, who is square, very smooth through the shoulders with a strong pedigree to blend well with Warkant’s.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/ws1.jpg

This Warkant - Claire breeding is the first Logres breeding top and bottom… representing four generations for us, and the first Logres to Logres breeding. It took years to get to this point, where we had the correct phenotype and pedigree to do this breeding. In the process we had to go to different breeding lines to grab a bit of virtue here and some qualities there…which always involved a bit of compromise. In the case of the outcross to Trotyl, we produced some very good dogs, and some that we choose not to go forward with.

Overall, we have taken the very best of the best from each generation to go forward with, always with the goal of producing our interpretation of the correct Doberman, which is square, well balanced, properly angulated… with great shoulders, beautiful flow of neck into shoulder, a strong topline, excellent tail set, superb loin connection… good bone and substance… all in a package of correct size make and shape, with good breed type, and that elegance and presence of a great show dog.

Getting back to Ken and Joel and our litter… Ken has agreed to show Diarado.

There are milestones in life… bench marks that tell you things are forever changed (like when your puppies are tall enough to reach the kitchen counter). I reached a bench mark this morning.

It happened like this: We try very hard to see that the kids have as many experiences of daily life as possible. They have the run of the kitchen, the office, the hall, our bedroom and the bathroom. They’ve seen and experienced most of the fixtures and appliances of a normal household. They’ve all stuck their heads in the frig and cupboard looking for treats, they’ve watched things swirl down the bowl… they come and go with me through the day, folding laundry, sitting at the computer… watching T.V. .. and in the process they’ve pulled the DSL line off the desk,:( and the laundry off the bed :rolleyes: … and done a 1001 other helpful things. :o:p I like to have them with me as much as possible… I like to have them actively involved :o but there is one moment of the day that has always been a peaceful oasis of calm for me… when I'm in the tub. I could even let the kids line up along the tub and check out the shampoo and stuff... but now that’s history. This morning Diarado jumped into the bath tub. :eek: Athletic and determined little rascal… thank goodness the water had all just drained out and he missed making a spectacular splash by just minutes.:rolleyes:

No new photos till the kids are posted... but I have this update... this morning I was looking at all the puppies ears... just checking on how they were healing. They all are doing beautifully, but all of the puppies have a few tiny sore spots... all except guess who?

Capricia does not have a mark on her.. not a single mark. And she still has her original cup… in pretty much pristine condition. We’ve replaced the cups on her buddies Hotline and Diarado three times. And we've replaced the tape on DiMaggio... but Capricia's tape and cup are perfect. At one point yesterday she had Hotline's head by the tape on the cup... dragging Hotline around. Not saying she's a lil' monster... but she is very much the leader of the group. Her new owners call it BRATTITUDE... and it fits. :);):rolleyes:

I am just saying that there has been no dealing with Athy since she found out about Ms. Capricia owning her. :)
Its really quite pathetic ya know?

Athy gave me a horrible way to go when I was getting Carly and made fun of me terribly because I was so excited. So now I found joy in turning the tables :)

Athy, congratulations as I know truly how much you have missed having a girly in your home. I can't wait to meet her.

As an FYI, Mariann Hein has all our training schedules mapped out.
She was a driving force in helping us get Carly and of course takes joy in reminding me of this.

Gotta tell you, it’s hard to let go… but it’s so comforting to know that Capricia will go to Athy. Arthur and I have come to know her well over the past few years, we have tremendous respect for her, and we trust that this is a great situation for Capricia.

As for Hotline… she is not going anywhere at the moment…

Hopefully tomorrow evening we can get photos of the kids one last time, as a group… I think you will be pleased at how they are developing.

It’s cold here, but they’ve all been outside, Diarado took a good look at the pond this morning but - thank goodness - he did not leap in. :rolleyes: Titus and Vaako both jumped (fell) right in when they were puppies…:eek: thinking the surface of the pond was something they could walk on. Titus seemed to like it, and last I heard he is quite the swimmer. :rolleyes: Not sure if Vaako has had much chance to swim lately… I suspect that Snow-boarding is more his game these days. :)

Well, yesterday Capricia and I met her new mom. Breeders here know that these kinds of days are always bitter sweet. It is never easy to let them go. Capricia is precious beyond words to me… I love her, and like most breeders, I have become very attached. Yesterday was the moment, where a breeder's judgment and abilities are tested. Did I evaluate the puppy properly? Is this going to be the right match between the individual puppy and the new owner?

I think I got it amazingly right.

Like many of you, I had never laid eyes on Athy. I had expectations, I knew she was bright and accomplished, and devoted to our breed, but nothing really prepared me for what an open, warm, loving woman she is. The moment I laid eyes on her I knew that she was the perfect for Capricia. Athy simply radiates a very positive loving energy… which Capricia connected to immediately.

As a breeder my wish is simply this: It is up to Athy to take Capricia forward on her journey through this life. Capricia will always be a tiny reflection of my love for her… and in a much larger sense, a reflection of all that she and Athy will accomplish together. I wish them joy every step of the way.:)

Aw, Elaine, thank you! Capricia (or Prissy as we're calling our little angel) just got back from a visit to Aunt Lynnie (Lyn Kargaard). Capricia met Charlie Brown and Zelda, investigated Lyn's front AND backyards and gave Charlie Brown's toy box a thorough going-over! Lyn took some photos of Lil Miss ass-end up in the toy box, hopefully they turned out and okay and she'll send them to me!

She is a GENIUS dog! She's already tinkled outside ON LEASH(!) several times and made a wonderful poop. She's met her big brother Jack who seems quite smitten. I have a photo of her that I'll upload later today of Prissy in the middle of the family room, the boys are playing Call of Duty (loud enough to simulate real warfare!), Christy is checking email and playing some game on her laptop and Prissy is in the middle of it gnawing on a bone! She is at home, large and in charge!

The whole family is mindlessly in love with her. She is truly a personality and a half :)

Yep, we're in Maryland. She and I hope to do a lot dog showin' when she's old enough :D Today we went visiting to her Aunt Lynnie's house (www.vikingdobermans.com). Capricia (Prissy) looked so tiny next to Charlie Brown who was quite taken with the young miss. The best part of the visit from Prissy's perspective was discovering Charlie Brown's toy box. Check this out - here's Miss Thing making herself at home and rooting around in Charlie's toys:

We had Hotline and Diarado out and about yesterday… what fun… one of the best Valentine’s Days ever. :) Hotline is not nearly as bold as Capricia (Diarado is more of Capricia’s twin in that respect) but she and her bro had a great time. We visited Petsmart… picked up a few new toys… got a chance to check out the hamsters and birds. I love this time in a puppy’s life.. there is so much they want to explore … and so much I want to show them.

I am looking forward to getting some fantastic photos on Saturday. The weather channel is calling for sunny and 60 degrees. :p I'm sure everyone has fond memories of the husband and wife photo shoot. Actually, Elaine and I have gotten better at these photo shoots and there is less swearing than there used to be. Luckily I survived Marine Corps Boot Camp, because Elaine can be like a Drill Instructor when it comes to photo shoots. Of course I also realize that Saturday night and Sunday morning Elaine will have a date with photoshop to process the photos. It takes time to go through a 1,000 photos and choose the best one. Maybe we can come up with something like Michelle does with her lovely doberman advertisements.

I hear ya Arthur on the Photo Sessions!!
Loving and cuddly exchanges such as the following are typical from me.

#1 " Why don't YOU try stacking Lightenin' Bug here and I will press the little button,huh.....YOU GIRL!! Come On...you scared....I dare ya! "

#2 " Learn to put whole sentences together if you expect me to understand you! I never took Gruntology in college! Clearly you did and excelled!!"

#3 " Why do you wait until I have him completely and perfectly positioned in a stack to tell me you aren't ready? YOU ASS!!"

#4 " You are like sandpaper on my ass right now! "

Those are just a few of my favorites....I have dozens!! Bob is also shouting things at me.....it is hard to imagine how any of us get a shot!

Listen...your's is much smaller, wirey and fast, but I think you can take her!
I have to wait until he isn't looking then jump him and climb up like a chimp and chew his ears off!

Anyhow....I will not tell you I will pray for you or anything like that....but I will do what I do and hope for the best......you can do it man!!

We should write a book: Secrets To A Long and Healthy Marriage… In Horses or Dogs. Actually, it’d be more like a Cautionary Tale condensed to a one-sentence three-word pamphlet, Can't Be Done!

I’ll say this, taking good photos of your dogs it not an easy or simple thing to do. If anyone thinks it is, they have never done it.

Here of the top of my head is the reality of trying to get that Money Shot of the dog:

the dog looks great but the lighting is wrong;
you have the perfect shot but the camera won’t take the photo;
the dog looks great but there was a dip in the ground, which gives the dog a fault he doesn’t have;
you get the right location, the dog is stacked, but there is not enough light and the camera won’t take the photo, so by the time the camera clicks the shot, the dog has moved;
the camera is clicking away at lightening speed, but the color is all off in every photo or every photos is just slightly out of focus;
the photographer is too far above, too far below, too far in front or too far behind the dog;
there is some shadow no one noticed that gives the dog the appearance of a fault;
the combination of the color of the dog and what the handler is wearing washes out the color of the dog;
you have the perfect shot but the camera won’t take the photo;
someone is picking their nose in the background;
the dog has dropped a pound or two, and you didn’t really notice it till you start looking at the photos;
you have the perfect shot but the camera won’t take the photo;
one foot is slightly too far forward or too far back;
the tail isn’t tickled up high enough;
you have the perfect shot but the camera won’t take the photo;
you finally have lightening strike and it all comes together and the camera battery dies;
the dog is stacked, the photo is good, but you forgot to clean up the neck:
you get what would be the perfect photo except one ear is cut off in the shot;
the dog looses all interest in the bait you have, no matter what the bait is, no matter how much the dog loves it before; and
you have the perfect shot but the camera won’t take the photo.

Honestly, by the end of most of our photo shoots Arthur’s ready to throw the frickn camera at the wall… and I’m ready to switch to showing gold fish. :D

… .

I agree with Arthur and Elaine to take proper photos and do it right is work and takes time practice and patience. It also requires the photographer to be a bit of a contortionist!!!!:p

Now somethings Cheryl forgot and so did Elaine and some of my all time favorites:

OK let me get in position, this spot is flat and should be good. Make sure when you walk him/her in you are lined up directly infront of me OK? Yeah just get in position.

I get in position which most of the time requires me to be sitting in an awkward position or lying on the ground. Are you ready yet? Yes dear I am ready, make sure you are right infront of me. Let me take some test shots to make sure the lighting is good. Walk him/her to "X" I made in the grass. I know I know just get ready.

Me lying there with the camera pointed at the "X" Cheryl walks the dog in I get one test shot then say cool we are good stack him/her. Cheryl how is the stack? Perfect and if you want a photo from behind him you are in the perfect spot. Well move then.....me? Yes you!!!:mad: Right it is easier for me to get up off the ground move the equipment and my 300 lbs ass then it is for you to just stop right in front of me?:confused: No Cheryl see the imaginary line from my extended arm to you the spot I need you to be? No I am not going to do that to myself...maybe Dear you should consider doing it to yourself:mad:

OK I am ready....yes that is close wait I need to move a bit....me rolling over getting in position...do you have the picture Bob? NO I was rolling around can you not see me....I am 6'5 and 300 lbs kind of hard to miss. I had him/her stacked perfectly...huff.

OK stack him I am ready.....I did have him stacked and you did not take the picture!!! Right because you were not infront of me stack him again. WHAT PART OF RIGHT INFRONT ARE YOU MISSING????? CAN YOU REALLY NOT SEE WHERE I AM AND WHERE THE "X" IS???? REALLY??? Explictive hurled at me....JUST STACK THE DOG HONEY!!! Explictive we lost the lighting because you cannot figure out where right infront of me is. OK let's go set up over here. It all begins again with now Honey I know you are an intelligent woman please help me by walking him/her to the F'ing X:eek:

Mind you all this time I am snapping photos just in case. Finally we are done and the million dollar question comes.....Did you get any good shots? I don't know I think so....How can you not know? Well I was kind of busy rolling around on the ground taking photos and did not have time to look at the quality.

Here take a look and see. Wow there are some great shots here Bob. This one would be great had you been lined up with where I stacked the dog!:D

ARGH!!! Had I been lined up...yeah you have to get better at moving to where I have staked him!! Right I think I will get back in the gym and take Yoga so I will be more flexible and move faster:D

How many photos did we take....about 800 how many are good and worth putting on the website......4:eek:

Are you ready to take some of the other dogs now...."yeah I think we have good light" As the words leave my mouth I wonder to myself HAVE YOU LOST YOU MIND because the same narrative ensues again.

It really is a fun way to spend an hour. Then you send some to your good friend and say what do think and they shred the photos telling you how bad they are...an hour later the phone rings and you hear I was looking at the photos you sent...this one is really good this one is ......This one is almost money shot....this one is. I guess they were not as bad as I thought at first. The thought of a bath tub and toaster becomes comforting!!!!:D

Bob

Ps.....don't even get me started on trying to teach others how to do this or having to spend months convincing someone..who will remain nameless that a cell phone camera is not the same as a digital camera:eek::p:D Or that you have be on the same level as the dog not standing over the dog;)

Then they get a camera and get better...there is hope:D And you start to get pretty good photos of the dog.....they tell you getting a good photo is really hard but having an actual camera and not a cell phone really helps!! My response...REALLY??? No REALLY??? Then we have a good laugh and chat about the process or something fun!!!

Gotta mention here… I was joking a bit above. The truth is that it took me over 30 years to get to a point where I could begin to stack a puppy well enough to get a photo that would be even remotely worth letting the world see. It took Arthur and I years and several cameras to get to a point where we could produce an even halfway decent photo. (We use a Nikon D5000.) Up until recently I left getting the stacked photos to the pros. A pro handler can do justice to the dog… that the average handler can not. A pro photographer knows where to position the camera and when to snap the photo. It is so much more difficult to get a good photo than it looks to the casual observer. The average owner simply can not do the dog justice, in part because it takes years and years to get it all together.

Bob is 6'5" Arthur is 6'4" By most standards they are big men. It is near impossible (bordering on comical) for Arthur to twist and contort his body down to where he needs to be to get the photo. I'd imagine that Bob is even funnier to watch. We actually bought an electric table that we can raise and lower to be at the right height to get good photos of the puppies.

What Bob and Cheryl have described above could l be Arthur and I... with possibly a few more expletives flying around. It is just not easy to get those shots that look so effortless. ;):cool:

Hahah Blackberry's are good phones Bob! :D Plus I'll have you know I had my ass sitting in 2 feet of snow for those snow pics last weekend so I don't wanna hear it LOL (which, btw, I thought some of them were pretty darn improved on my end!) . Anyways, it is ridiculously hard to get that "perfect" shot, especially when you see the dog every day in the house and in the yard and they just throw stacks that look amazing, but you as an inept handler can't convey that through either bad handling/ bad picture conditions, and mostly in my case, a combination of both :(

But seriously, sorry to get off topic, good luck for real Elaine...TRUST ME I know how hard/annoying it is. LOL Bob and Cheryl could probably literally kill me at this point :rolleyes:

Yesterday was the first day off Arthur has had in weeks… one of those rare days that we got to spend together, doing exactly as we pleased. We took DiMaggio (3 months old) into town, to Pete’s, the local feed store. This was DiMaggio’s first time on a lead, first trip from home. A feed store on Saturday is always a busy place, made even more so because Pete is only open till noon on a Saturday. We wandered in with DiMaggio at about 11:30… it was total chaos. People lined up everywhere rushing to get their feed for the week before Pete closed. DiMaggio handled it like a pro… he was out at the end of the lead, tail up, greeting everyone, curious about everything in the store, and curious about all the customers, who just loved him, Pete and his employees loved him… he was a HUGE hit with all sorts of people from grannies to little children… lots of, “that’s the prettiest Doberman we’ve ever seen” compliments. I tell you, DiMaggio is an amazing. After the feed store we went over to our favorite bakery, loaded up on all sorts of goodies, came home and spent the rest of the day playing with the dogs.

This morning we got some photos of the kids… they are three months old… sort of at that funky stage where they are more parts and pieces that the whole mature dog.

Here is DiMaggio. What with trying to find the right lighting, trying to find the right bait, trying to get the little sweetheart to stack, and the rush because Arthur had to be at work by ten this morning, this is the best we could do. Even under the best of circumstances I can see why people seldom show you stacked photos of their dogs at this age… it’s hard to get it all together with a dog so young… and still keep it fun for the dog. :)

And Diarado :) who took a huge leap into a full bathtub this morning… which was quite a surprise!!! :eek: He sprung out again with all the agility and athletic prowess of his namesake, the German Holsteiner stallion Diarado... and left a trail of water all over the floor that you'd think only a Old English Sheepdog could leave. I have no idea how he managed it... but what a mess. :( Diarado is more smoothly put together than any puppy I’ve ever seen… his is literally poured into his skin… as Dave Frei says, “an elegant athlete in a tight fitting wrapper” though at this age he’s more of "an elegant goof ball in a tight fitting wrapper."

With all the work that goes into having a litter, the sleepless nights, the stress and worry over ears, tails etc and the time investment to teach babies how to stack, the sense of pride and accomplish you and Arthur must have has to be enormous!!!

They are both Very Nice puppies. It is hard to put into words but you look at them and say I think they are nice...am I being subjective...am I looking at them the right way. You make yourself nuts!!:p Then you take them out and you hear the compliments, that is the nicest Dobe I have seen or wow they are beautiful, and all of the sudden you say to yourself....we did do something really cool here. :D:D

I know you and Arthur know what I am trying to say although I am saying it very poorly!

I look at these babies and see quality!! I see anticipation of them stepping in the ring for the first time. You and Arthur are going to have a lot of fun when these guys hit the ring.

Congrats they are beautiful!!!

Bob

PS I am half way through the manual....some really neat stuff in there!:p

Hotline is a joy to work with, an absolute joy. She is tough as nails (beating the stuffing out of her brothers), and yet she can be the most loving sweet little girl :)

What follows is true of any dog, but to really appreciate how nice a puppy is, and how well put together they are, you have to have your hands on them and feel that smoothly muscled “poured into their skin” package. Warkant certainly passed on his shoulder assembly, beautiful correct forechest, strong top line, great loin connection, bone and substance. Claire seems to have shortened them up a bit, and she's given her kids discipline... they know there are limits to what they can do (they accept things in stride), which in general makes them very easy to live with. This litter has been an utter and complete joy in every way. We are thrilled with these kids, both temperamentally and structurally. We are head over heels in love with them. By the time they are ready to be specialed, Arthur will be done with his residency and we will have the luxury of showing them as we please. We expect to have a lot of fun with these kids. :)

Photos don’t always tell the whole story… if they did we wouldn’t have to actually attend dog shows, we could simply submit photos. In person Hotline and DiMaggio are pretty impressive… but Diarado is in a class by himself. He is smooth as glass, solid as a rock… really a lovely boy to have your hands on. :) The very last thing we wanted was another red boy... but this boy is very special... so he's staying.

It’s hard to believe that another year has past… so many milestones, both happy and sad, March will never be the same to me. I think we're past the worst of Winter. This time of year is pretty drab in this part of the country.. everything is brown, even the lawn. Still, it’s getting warmer. Yesterday I had the puppies out with Ahb and Titan… here are some of the photos. And before you say it, yes, I agree, the photos are wretched. But when you’re taking photos by yourself it is simply not possible to get much more than “Puppies too close

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/Ahb-puppy.jpg

and Puppies too far away.”

Bad as they are, in my experience these kinds of photos will be personal treasures in the years to come.

Oh that last photo is a hoot!!!

It is impossible to get good photos when it's just you, the camera and the wriggling puppy! The only time I can get a half decent photo of Capricia is when she's sleeping!

We're going to visit Aunt Lyn on Sunday, hopefully with her help we can get a nice photo or two!

We have George Alston's Clinic this weekend, so we may be able to get a few good photos.

I was thinking back to the litters DSNN members have had this past year or so, thinking about the hours and hours of love, devotion and plain hard work we all heap on our puppies. Sometimes we're on our own, sometimes we're part of a team, regardless, the puppies come first. In the years to come we'll be able to see the results of all this effort, both in and out of the ring. I think that the greatest fulfillment any of us will have is that these precious kids are loved. And in that regard, the bond that Athy and her family have formed with Capricia is but one example of what makes this all so worthwhile.

Here are a few photos I took yesterday... as you can see, they are merely informal shots of him being stacked in a show type venue… not perfect win photos by any means.

Diarado is just over 3 months. (I have been puking my guts out all day today :(:(:(:eek:… will have more on the Alston Clinic later). Bottom line, if you want to show your dogs, and you have the opportunity to attend a George Alston Clinic, do so. I think you’ll love the experience and you meet great people. We met Tracy Daugherty at a George Alston Clinic.

Should also mention here that I am very proud of Diarado. He took in the event like a little gentleman and I think he had a grand time, especially after Steve got down on the floor to play with him and accept kisses. (yes I admit it, these puppies give kisses... ask Athy :D ) I am waiting for permission to publish the one of the handler kissing Diarado:)

The handler in the photo is Karolynne McAteer, who judged some of the Sporting Breeds at Westminster this year, and did a bit of the on-air commentary for Westminster with Dave and she interviewed all the Group Judges for the network telecast. Also, Karolynne is in charge of the filming of the breeds at the Garden. She is so much fun to spend time with. Her wit, charm and extensive experience in dogs makes her an absolute joy.

Diarado had never seen Karolynne till she took the leash for the photos.. and this was his first time out at a venue like this. In all I took about 50 photos of Karolynne and Diarado. I'm not sure if any of these photos convey this accurately, but Karolynne's hands on a dog are soft and elegant… that is so rare to see any more.

. Thank you Joan. You would have loved to be there... there was a lovely Irish Setter bitch… and lots of discussion about Setters and Sporting dogs in general... I found it very interesting; I suspect you would have enjoyed it as well.

I really do not want intact males (plural) so I think we may look for a co-owner for Diarado. Should be easy, all we need to find someone who has our same goals for him, and the fierce commitment of Bob and Cheryl, the handling skillset of Tracy (or really deep pockets) the love and devotion of all our puppy people combined. How hard can that be to find? :D:rolleyes:

The forms that I have seen for George Alston clinics say not to bring an untrained dog and no dogs under 1 yr, no exceptions. Does he actually give clinics for the babies?
By the way, your puppy looks gorgeous. Paula
