Elliott Weiss is doing BIS (so maybe this is good for the Scottie. Elliott's already given her a BIS in some pretty good competition, which included Diego's Boxer). Mrs. Kimberly Meredith-Cavanna is doing Working. Ms. Grace McGlynn is doing Dobermans.

My bet as of 12-9-09 is that Elliott will love the Irish Wolfhound that Marie Sommershoe shows. Jane just gave him a BIS last weekend... when the dog is on, he's hard to beat. And of course, my sentimental favorites are C.J. (if she is still out) and the Boxer, whom we "found" when watching the breed video last year.

But as Dave Frei always says, “It’s Westminster, the only surprise would be if there was no surprise.”

Westminster starts a week from tomorrow… I haven’t a clue what Elliott will do, I always thought he was a good “dog man” and by that I mean an excellent handler and a very good judge.. who knows good dogs. I wish he’d apply for Dobermans and we could have him do our National. The only Working Group breed he does is Giants (he showed Bartok years ago and even Brucie for a time, before I co-owned Brucie). He took a Gordon ("Gordon" the Gordon) for a friend, they purchased the dog on the grooming table in the morning and Elliott got a BIS on the dog that afternoon. There is a Sporting Dog that I would love to see make it through to Mr. Weiss (but it is a bit of a long shot). Beyond that, I’d guess that the Scottie has a very good chance, if she shows. And of course C. J. has a chance… as does the Boxer bitch. C. J. has over 51 Bests… her nearest competitor in Dobermans is Jayla, with 5 Bests (but we hear that Jayla is retired).

The battle in the Working Group will probably be between the Boxer (who finished the year with 21 Bests) and the Dobe. We hear that one of the top Herding dogs in the country (shown by one of my favorite handlers) may not be shown… not sure what has come of that situation, Julie may know a few more details.

Checked my phone messages this morning… as always it was mostly junk, but I’d missed a call from a dear friend who is up in New York for Westminster.

She never misses the Garden, lots of parties, wish I was there. Must say, I love this lady… she’s been in dogs forever, knows where all the bodies are buried, is more full of life and insight than any ten people I know… with great wit and a wicked sense of humor, and tongue to match. She can curse you out like a truck driver… but with her charming British accent, you thank her and move on. And she has more energy than any 10 people I know. Anyway, she’s up there, on the scene … if she passes on anything that I can repeat in print, I will. :cool:

Much as I once loved Westminster and all the parties, the show itself is a long long day (two days). By the time Groups are over I’m exhausted. Unless you have a skybox to go and relax, it’s really almost too much for me anymore. We had Donald Trump’s Sky Box one year… it was fun. The following year we had someone else’s sky box, there was a large group of us, including Linda Krukar, who made a huge gesture of bowing to Cathy Ceely. Cathy had beaten Carlos Rojas for BOS with Ch. Chehalem’s Time Machine, under Irene Biven. I know, it was only BOS, but Carlos was showing Damien at the time – 1995 - and Damien was #1 Dobe. Moe won the Breed with Halston and walked in the Groups. Maripi went BIS with the Scottie.

There is no substitute for attending the Garden, it's a great experience, not to be missed, even if you only attend or show there once. But if you stay home and watch on T.V. you can roll over and go to sleep after the judge points, which has a distinct advantage. ;)

IF you’re into football, typically you watch bowl games. In Hockey, you watch the Stanley Cup… in Tennis – the US Open or Wimbledon… etc. In dogs, historically our greatest dog show is Westminster. It was always considered “the” show to win, or “the” show to judge. The show attracts all the top dogs in the country and the top dog people in the world. Great show dogs retire off of a Westminster win. When I'm up all night with a litter of puppies, one thing that sustains me at 3:00 a.m. is wondering if in this litter will be the guy that goes Breeder /Owner handled BIS at the Garden, which has always been a goal.

When I lived on the West Coast years ago we always got together to watch the telecast, even non-dog relatives got caught up in the excitement. Those are now very fond memories. The goal of producing the best-of-the-best was generated by a desire to have a dog I bred standing out there on the green carpet at the Garden (closest I've gotten so far is a BOS).

There is a superstition about making predictions about who will win. Supposedly it will jinx the dog, but today is Saturday… if you’re judging or showing at the Garden you’re already there, and sure as heck not sitting at a laptop reading DSNN… so we can’t possibly be jinxing anyone one way or another. And, as Dave Frei always says, the only surprise would be if there were no surprises.

We’re an opinionated bunch.. so let’s hear your predictions. Who do you want to see win you favorite Breed, Group and BIS. We should all pick a dog that we think will go all the way. My choice, my long shot hearts desire to go all the way is a ten year-old red lass, who’s call name begins with R, shown by a guy who’s name begins with not J and not L.

I have a bit more tunnel vision then others. For me it is all over after working and I just wait for BIS at that point.
I do enjoy the Terriers, mainly because I like to look for a Mini Bull I may want a puppy from or Staffordshire (English) I think is just rumbling around looking for a little trouble!
I love those stubby little buggers with their intense eyes and bad ass attitudes! I always believe they are looking at the Airdale going, " You lookin' at me? You want a piece of this? " LOL!

For what it is worth, I think it goes this way in Working.

Working is going to be a fist fight between Rissa ( if CJ is there) and Diego. I am already assuming BOB is going to those two in their respective breeds. If it goes any other way in Dobes, I may strangle someone.
If CJ doesn't take BOB , Scarlett should handle the Group with ease. I do not see another Doberman beating her with The Garcia at the end of her lead and she is a really a damn good Boxer!!
Again...this is JMO.

If Jess takes BOB in Rotties, I see him giving them a run for their money for G3 with his Rottie...really a quality dog! Besides, I'd like to see my boys in the top 3 in Working. He is my sentimental pick for that group.

The " Terrors" will go to the Scottie of course. Given.

The other Given is she gets BIS. I do not believe there is going to be any suprise there.

I would be pleasantly suprised if the Boxer or Dobe get it but let's not kid ourselves here. ;)

It would be a lot of fun this year to be ringside to watch Boxers and Dobermans and the Group.

Just some more data to play around with. Here, by Group and Breed are the dogs that were invited to enter Westminster, because they were in the top 5 for their breed. I notice that 2 of the 5 automatic invitees to Westminster in Dobermans are Phillmar Dobermans. Go Phil, Cheryl and Lana!!!

I will say that I hope a certain dog will show/win in a certain breed because I was not happy with the representation of a certain breed last year. He has many group placements which is not exactly an easy feat with this certain breed.

Seems like the Breeds and Groups we all want to watch are tomorrow... except for the Herding Group.

I am going out on a limb (not) and predicting that the Poodle will win the Toy Group, the Puli will win Herding, and no one will win Non Sporting. I have no clue who will win Hounds, but I am fond of Afghans, and Frank did the Breed, so, since the Wolfhound I like will not even be in the Group tonight, I'll go with the Afghan, merely because Frank Sabella sent him (but first I'm going to go look at the video breed judging).

So, let's see how we're doing here. Ron’s Poodle got through to BIS, and so did the Puli (so I’m at 50/50). For sentimental reasons I was hoping that the other Whippet got out of the Breed, but this one is certainly lovely and it's nice to see a Whippet win the Group at the Garden, where the ring suits a big moving dog. I did not see the Frenchie, maybe Christina can tell us if it will blow Elliott’s doors off.

Things really heat up for me tonight. We'll have to wait the the very end to see if the Scottie is on tonight. I actually don’t care who wins in Dobes or who wins the Working Group, but if C.J. gets that far, she will be my sentimental favorite for BIS (over the Scottie). If it comes down to C.J or Scarlett in the Group, that will be worth watching. Diego and Carissa are both on top right now and whenever you get two compettive handlers fired up to win, it's worth watching.

My heart right now goes out to a 10 year old Irish Setter veteran. I would love to see her out there tonight on the Green carpet.

Well… good luck to your girl too. I sat with the judge Karolynne McAteer at our last club meeting... what a bright funny lady. (Did you know that a barn fell on her this past fall? In the snow, took hours to get her freed... almost killed her!) She will have her work cut out for her in Setters today, but I’ve seen her judge, she’s about as capable as they come. I guess I’ll have to be rooting for both Roxanne and Ella. There is just something about the breed and the people it seems to attract that is very appealing to me. :) and you don't have to dock or crop a thing.

Btw, Karolynne is a great lady to sit and talk dogs with. She is very bright, very funny and knows just about everything there is to know about the specials in the ring. She has worked for years behind the scenes to put on the Westminster telecast.

So a bit of an upset in Non-Sporting last night, huh?
The money was on the Bull Dog and here comes this little pudgey,adoable Frenchie who said "Not so fast Fat Boy!"
What I find completely endearing is his handler's absolute joy and suprise. You could see it in his face and hear it in his voice when they interviewed him. I thought he was going to cry....he was adorable too!

I of course wanted to see Diego in the Group Placing with Martha's Aurora. The little bitch is very nice, I see her doing great things like Nanda did with Diego! Very pretty Tibbie!

Not much of a suprise with Walker....the dog is pretty spiffy and with ole' boy handling......very hard to beat, right?

Who didn't love that Greyhound! She is beautiful!! So was the whippet and it was nice to see them go 1 ,2 .


On a side note. I wanted to mention that one of our DSNN members and a very dear friend of our's ( our Pagan's best pal :) ) Lauren is up at the Garden for the first time.
We can all remember the first time we were there. So exciting!!
Imagine being 17 and having the oppurtunity to assist one of the very best, Diego Garcia. He and his lovely wife Eve asked her if she would like to assist them at the Garden.

Her text messages from the grooming area and the one telling us they were waiting to go in Non Sporting, just made us smile!
I recieved a text while I was waiting to see my surgeon that said, " I just learned to groom a Basset! I am learning so much from him! It is so exciting , I can't stand it!! ", left Bob and I laughing and the entire room looking at us like we were crazy!
Some things are just right and good , Lauren being able to do this is one of those things.

I think C.J. for Breed and Blaze for BOS makes perfect sense.

They just posted the Irish Setter results, Roxanne (a.k.a. Ch Militza's Somethingroyal) went BOS. Hmmm? She may be the oldest dog in competitiion this year, so BOS at the Garden at 9 (which is god only knows in dog years), from an entry of twelve, including the top specials in the country, is a credit to her breeders and owners. Here is the breed photo of her from today (that is Ken handling her). I had my hands on her when Ken had her on the table when I was picking up Diarado. She is absolutely beautiful to go over.. her muscling and conditioning are superb.. her topline is a firm as you see in the photo. We should all look so good when we’re her age. Heck, I'd like to look that good now :)

I'm cheering for CJ - a great champion deserves a great stage to say goodbye and lets face it CJ is in another league - for her to go into retirement without a national win or a BOB @ The Eukanuba or a BOB @ The Garden would have been a tragedy. #2 all breeds but i'm betting that the doberman ring is so much more competitive than what the Scottie has to go through and she has the Boxer in the group. Carissa did the longest down & back - they seem to have a lot of fun in the ring and CJ seems to love the ring. well done now I dont know if the line up is over but win CJ & you'll be bigger than the Dictator ever was

And for the judge who’s judging is consistent enough to put up what is clearly the same phenotype.

Now go look at the video of the breed judging , this year and in 2009 and tell me what you see. I see a few things. :mad::rolleyes:

Supposedly they are going to retire C.J. and breed her. She is four years old. Now here is the $60,000 question.. given how special C.J. is, how great the act she has with Carissa is, the fact that she has 61 Best In Shows (or some such number) and how long it took to achieve that record, shouldn’t C.J. stay out longer?

She is clearly one of the greatest Doberman bitches in breed history. But really, what are the chances she will reproduce herself? What did Sera ever produce that we look for in pedigrees today? And even if C. J. does produces well, will lightening strike twice? Will she produce that one puppy that has it all in one package, the structure, the temperament... (with Rissa as a handler and Bosley as a backer)? The odds are overwhelmingly against it.

I wish she would stay out another year and blow the frickin doors off of every record in our breed. It is there for the taking. The C.J. team is about to walk away from a chance they may never have again. Dogs like C.J. come along once in a life time, if that.

They already have the pedigree, they can breed C.J.’s littermates. The litter on the Puppy Silhouettes thread is out of C.J.’s dam (and again, what in heck happened to the beautiful red boy?) And think about, what did Ada produce, even bred to Eddie? She could have been out for another year, and lovely as Ada is, C.J. is better bitch.

C.J. is in a position to do what no other Doberman has ever done… I wish they’d give her a chance to really show us all what extraordinary quality she is.

Seriously, I am not saying that C.J. has to prove her worth anywhere ... I am saying that she is in a unique position to do what no other Doberman has ever done.

I agree in a general sense that you would need more than one litter to establish all you might wish to know about a bitches reproductive capabilities, if that was the direction you were going with your comments… but in 2010 you simply can't breed that many Dobermans, there are just too many societal pressures not to.

In any event, I’d just rather that this thread stayed a bit more generally on the Garden….. for example… the video of BIS in on Hulu.com for those who missed the telecast. (here is a link to the second half of the Working Group http://www.hulu.com/watch/128533/westminster-kennel-club-dog-show-best-of-working-group-part-2#s-p1-sr-i1 And all of the breed judging from the past few years in on the Westminster website. I think there are all sorts of observations we could be making… for example… there was one dog in the BIS line up last night that really left me cold… I guess you have to be an aficionado of that breed to appreciate the dog’s quality, because I am not, and I did not get what that dog was doing in the BIS line up.:confused:

Here’s the $94,000.00 Question:
How many of us are now getting down on the floor like Rissa does? I was trying to do that with Diarado.. this morning, he wanted no part of it. He seemed to be saying, "What in the heck are you doing down there mom. Get up off the floor." Clearly it will take some time for the dogs to get used to this. :);)

I’m going to get a whole new series of photos of all of our dogs, with us down on the floor like Rissa (except it will absolutely kill Arthur’s knees to try getting up and down like that). :(:p

I have a plan… the very next time Carissa walks into the ring.. let’s say 6-9 Black Puppy Dog… doesn’t matter where the show is, after the judge has checked the class in, set the book down on the table and turned to review the entry, every handler in ring should drop to the floor in front of their dogs like Carissa does. :):p


Btw, did anyone notice that there was an example of absolutely no bend of stifle? The Frenchie in the BIS line up has absolutely no bend of stifle, I mean zero, nada zip? :(

Rissa shows most of her stuff like that.
She does it with her puppies on the regular.

Rissa stacked Vaako a couple of times way back when, and the first thing she did was drop to the grass after he was in the stack.
She bends back and takes a look from the ground.
I liken it to a photographer gettin gon th edogs level for the shot.

We are local to each other and I have known her since she was 14 or some such thing. So it is just Rissa. Bless her heart!

She makes a better picture with the bitch when she drops down. In the attached win photo C.J. is on a pedastool and it is not as obvious, but look back at the video to see the standing versus kneeling Carissa.

Hey I agree with most of what you're saying here. As you know, I've always been a HUGE fan of C.J.'s and have always been hugely enthusiastic of her show career. Even though Carmen started her as a special, for much of C.J.'s career, the act that I have loved so much is the act with Carissa... which includes this “down on the floor style.” Clearly it works, I think it is memorable.. and I get why she does it. But truth be told, if you listen to people who give handling lessons, the pros like George Alston ... and even further down the scale, to handlers like Jeff Brucker... each and every one of them would tell a Doberman handler to “get up off the floor.” You know that as well as I.

And I think it would be funny if an entire class in an entry dropped to the floor like Carissa does as the judge turned to go over their line up.

There is a lot to the story behind C.J. I think everyone knew C.J. was show quality as a puppy, but the person who purchased her just wanted a pet doberman. She had no interest in a show prospect. When she looked at the puppies she decided she just had to have C.J. They said okay, but you have to do everything we say as far as raising the bitch and keeping her in shape so that she could be shown. The deal went through and the rest is history.

Now can you imagine your first show dog having the success of C.J?

So, I hear from the guy I'm sleeping with (who seems to talk to more people than I do), that C.J. is home with her mom. IT is really over.

So, here's a HUGE congratulations to all of team C.J. You have so much to be proud of... you set the bar pretty high for the rest of us. Good luck with future breedings and - THANK YOU - from Arthur and I, for being such a class act with such a beautfiul bitch. :)
