View Full Version : Do Professional Handlers have all the fun??
Just read this from Infodog. What do you all think about their statistics?

I think that the "No Agent Listed" is due to owners making entries and not putting the handler down or not having the handler ID#.
I have done it myself when I haven't had the Handler's ID #,I just have left it blank.
Don't buy the %. O/H are not put up on the average over the Gwen's and Diego's of this world.
Not happening folks.

I only glanced at the data… but Cheryl is dead on accurate. Look at the ring and then look at the catalog; for all sorts of reasons, the handlers are often not listed.
Whether or not a ring is dominated by professional handlers varies widely from breed to breed. In some breeds, including some with low point schedules, it is very common to see owner handlers. In breed like Dobermans, professional handlers dominate the ring. And some of the Doberman owner handlers, like Carmen Pitts, Linda Krukar, Michelle Santana, Jody Podino, Faye Straus, Cathy Ceely, Linda George, etc. etc, etc, are either good enough to be pros, or they are also pros, but would not necessarily be listed that way because they largely show the dogs they breed. I think to be truly accurate, for Dobermans anyway, the data would have to list the handler. I can’t remember the last time I saw an owner handler win the Breed in Dobermans.

I think this may have been stimulated from the strong response the AKC has received from the survey....at least from the Doberman community.
I only hear or see the O/H going BOB when there isn't a pro there or they pulled their dogs and split.
Cheryl
I agree with all y'all. I think that the study is a bit misleading to say the least.
Professional handlers really DO have all the fun for a whole bunch of reasons. I guess this is the biz's way of trying to encourage us regular schmos to hand over our entry dollars and amble on into the ring?

I can tell you that out here in the West you had better have a handler and One that is known. The only time I've seen a true owner handler do anything was when Philip judged our show and he chose a very nice fawn female from Canada with breed. She deserved it and it shocked a few big time "owner handlers" out here. We almost lost the gal she was so shocked and happy.....
If any of us wants to show ourselves we do the International shows when they are here. The judges look at the dogs in that venue....I actually put a BIS on Cayenne and I'm no handler.....

Even if they don’t have a prayer, there is something very special about owners handling their own dogs. I’m a fan of owner handlers. I’d love to see a class with Arthur and Bob handling. Cheryl, Lili, Athy and I could sit ringside with some refreshing drinks… and enjoy ourselves til all we fall over sideways. :)

Listen....I would pay someone to make the Arthur/Bob Show happen!
Only condition is Gwen and Diego HAVE TO BE in the same ring. I want to watch Diego's face while it all plays out. " No Bob, like this...over the front...over the front Bob....listen to me Bob....."
Then we need to record Ole' Girl's face when one of them beats her...that is always ...as the commercial says..." Priceless"! I have only witnessed that event once or twice but, it is oh so worth it to see!
Now that would be special!

Elaine wrote the text above. (Don't ask how I got it to appear in that box.)
Well I am gearing up to do just that. There will be no hints or forewarning. It may be happening at a show near you. Hopefully no one will fall over. I would love for Bob to join me.
As for the statistics, please don't try to convince us that amatuers win more than professional handlers in the doberman ring. Look at 2009 and Dobermans. A total of 163 best of breed with Agent. I don't think that even covers the number of times CJ alone won the breed with an agent in 2009.

Again...have fun with that!
What dog you giving him to take in...he will be there!
Did anyone see the UKC thing on TLC last pm. What about that chick with the GSD, huh?
Cheryl
BTW...I do want to know how that happened in the little box thingy! Crazy!

Which dog is Bob showing? Don't you mean dogs!:D First he shows Pagan, then Reni and Rowan, then Vaako for the Breed. I will show Dimaggio, Elaine is showing Diarado and Hotline. For the Breed I will take in Warkant and she will take in Titan. I think Bob and I will need a backup. With my plan there is no time for Elaine to sit ringside laughing and having a good time.;)

Geez... your internet connection goes to hell-in-a-hand-basket for a week and look what happens.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Arthur, our agreement is for ONE dog and ONE show... O-N-E.. count it with me... 1.
...one dog, one show, and you were going to show... ONCE.
NO Titan, Diarado, Hotline... or any other dogs... You wouldn't let Esteban operate on one of your patients would you? Let's let the dog show professionals "be professional." You practice medicine and they can be professional handlers... now that's a plan!
And though I love him to pieces, I'm going to have to put a muzzle on that Pop-Up guy. Funny the trouble one simple phone call can cause. :o:rolleyes:
And btw, I am not going in the Dobe ring unless it's simply to hold the points.

Ain't gonna happen. He's on a mission. As you know, I was against it at first, but as a dear friend says, "Let him have his fun, in ten years who's going to care? ":D Bottom line, he loves the dog and wants to show him… I guess he’s earned the right.... and I think we can all take this too seriously sometimes. We are all in this to win, but IT should be fun too.
We'll just have to see how it goes. At times like this I wish it was legal to drink at dog shows.

I know who that is, and they are like a little mob trying to wear you down....
Bob of course went..." Arthur's crazy...but it will be fun to watch! "
Ya well...he is finished and you aren't trying to put points on him...so what the heck!

By one I meant one Show Circuit, one outing, one good honest try, not one show or one dog.
Look, I just came from the gym as I am trying to shed a few pounds so I look good in the win photo. If we win, the photo can hang in my office for more than 10 years for all to remember.
You are right, I might not let Esteban operate on one of my patients, but he likely would do rather well. He has good hands. Correct me if I am wrong, but his brother is a doctor too.
Arthur, you go for it! Take a handling class and maybe you'll get as good as I did! :D
