Here’s a bit of data, direct from the American Kennel Club, that some of you may need to know. If Gwen (or any handler on a judging panel) has shown a dog for you less than four months before the DPCA National (or any show, regardless of whether or not it's a Regular class, Sweeps or Futurity), or shows a dog for you sooner than 4 months after the National, you can NOT show to her at the National. I would expect that Gwen has already informed her clients of this.

I wouldn't assume anything.

I guess it would depend upon whether or not the AKC considers a godparent to be a family member. If yes, then no you can’t. But the AKC may not have a policy on godparents. Sort of like, vets who are dog owners show to their clients, and that has always seemed far too close for comfort.

The answers to any of these kinds of questions is to call AKC and ask. Sometimes they will simply say, “Hey that may have been entirely within the Rules and Regs, and innocent, but it looks tacky.” The goal should be to avoid the impression of impropriety.

About showing to Gwen… far as I recall, she has never handled a dog for us… and I have never seen her judge. At this point we will show to her. I think she would feel a sense of honor about the assignment and will judge the dogs in her ring as she sees them on the day. There are other handlers-turned-judges who make my skin crawl they are so sleazy, and we would not willingly show to them, but I have never had that sort of impression of Gwen.

Gwen was my longtime handler up to Vaako.
I can show to her, will I is the question.

The perception is the reality.....pretty much the long and short of it.

To E's question here...It was " Can you or should you show to your godmother?"

Now if you reference her statements and mine after, it will all jive for ya! LOL!

My perception is your reality. Pretty much the deal.

This thread makes me laugh… but it brings up something that I think is important. Sometimes we write something and then think better of it… or change our mind, or for whatever reason wish to delete it. That is perfectly do-able with this forum and perfectly fine in my book… though it does leave for some odd responses that appear to come out of thin air. ;)

Sometimes I think it'd be nice if we had a "delete" function for the spoken word.

Speaking of showing to Gwen, who is going to Nationals? Everyone in our area has decided against going. We are still on the fence, but need to make a decision soon. It seems like the distance, the expense and the economy over all has been the deciding factors for a lot of people.

No question but that it is expensive. For the price of one National you can finish several dogs. :) Far as I can tell, the reason to go is simply to see the class dogs coming up, so that you are current with what certain bloodlines are producing. Having hundreds of Dobermans all in one place gives a breeder the opportunity to observe trends in the breed. For example… I think we've pretty much nailed good bone & substance and good shoulder assemblies. We have square dogs (though you still see long from time to time, but not so much). I think we now need to focus more on good flow of neck into shoulders, strong loin connections, good croups and tails sets. We need “good driving power in the hindquarters” with "strong rear action drive” which is a function of good bend of stifle and flexion. IMO, these are things breeders need to work on in 2010 and the future. :)

Btw, people sometimes wait til the last minute to decide to go.

Question: (although it does not affect me as she does not handle my dogs) -

Do you mean that you yourself may not handle ANY of your dogs to her if you've used her within 4 mos? OR, that a dog she personally has handled may not be entered under her, but other dogs of yours are ok? Just curious

PS I'm behind the times but what is she judging? Sweeps or Futurity or something?

Gwen is judging Grand Prize Futurity & Futurity Puppies.

You can not show to her if she (or a member of her household) has shown any dog for you (or a member of your family or household) for 4 months before and up to 4 months after the National.

Gwen has never ever shown for us, so we can (and would) show to her. Unfortunately, we did not nominate the Warkant - Claire litter, and the Titan-Flip litter will be 6 months on October 1st, so we have no stake in this issue at all.

That's interesting. Sure makes a large chunk of northeast dogs ineligible! But, seems fair.

Gwen is a pretty bright woman… and she knows the rules. I would bet Arthur’s left lung that she considered this all thoroughly before she accepted the assignment. I would bet that her clients with 2010 Futurity Nominated puppies (of which there may be very few) either backed off these past months (and will not use her again for the next four months), or they simply will not show in the Futurity.

We were wondering if Gwen can show an the host club and/or National shows since she is on the panel... I would think that the answer is "no" ... but I'm not sure.

I believe as per AKC rules she can't show 3 days before and 3 days after, although I think it would be seriously frowned upon to show at all at the cluster.

The answer should be "no", but again, I would assume nothing.

I am with you Chelsea...should be interesting.
