RE: Steve Martin and SND
After Hurricane Katrina, I sent a check to Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue. (I also sent large checks to Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, a couple to Craig Sharry for his wonderful BBQ dinners in Houston for Katrina victims, besides my usual donations to The Smile Train and FINCA. Pushing my budget, I donated several nice items from my collection to aid Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue. By then, GCDR was using Special Needs Dobermans to collect for them, so I contacted SND and sent my items to them, with the proviso that the proceeds would go directly to and ONLY to Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue. Contrary to Cheri McNealy's emphatic statements (I guess she has my phones bugged???) there WERE 'strings' attached and those were the strings.
It was my wish and right not to support DPCA Rescue. (Despite my having raised over $100,000 with CH of COPE and having donated $10,000 to $15,000 to it myself, I am not able to belong to DPCA. I have commited no offense, never violated the COE and have been denied membership without any reason given by the BoD.) I still wish to support Dobermans in trouble.
Steve Martin called me from the National and explained that the DPCA was going to take 50% of anything SND took in, and knowing, he said, I preferred not to donate to the DPCA he said he was pulling the items I had donated from silent auction. Steve absolutely was aware then and now of my wishes. After all, THAT is why he called me from the National and pulled my items from his table. So when my items quietly became the "CYBERDOBE's Raffle for DPCA Rescue", I was very upset, indeed very angry. I considered Steve's actions to be fraudulent; he knowingly misdirected my donations from one cause to another.
Had I wished Cyberdobes to raffle my items to benefit DPCA, I would have sent them direct to DPCA a 501(c)(3), and Steve knew it. I angrily demanded the return of all remaining items and donated them to another Doberman Rescue of my choice. I count Steve fortunate not to have been present when I found out what he had done.
Steve immediately applied the old adage: The best defense is a good offense... that is, when you have done something wrong, attack very loudly! He began accusing me of not caring about the dogs, not caring about Dobermans, and trashed me on CD to cover up that he had no right to give my donations to Cheri to become the CYBERDOBES Raffle for DPCA Rescue. He even insisted that he had no idea I would have a problem with McNealy. Give me strength!
BTW I was not thanked by DPCA or GCDR, despite the fact that 'my' item brought.. what??? $1700?? Where it went I have no idea. I imagine Cheri was heartily thanked, though.
SND has not to my knowledge made public any reports of how their funds are used. And don't get me started on how disgusting Martin's treatment was to Grace Joffe, the originator of SND. But still, I have donated to particular SND dogs before this incident and since. I donated recently for my memory of Grace. Sometimes it IS about the dogs...
