This postcard was sent to a registered kennel (with the Dept. of Agriculture) and his response to that postcard. I have his permission to cross post so I am in hopes of thwarting his endeavor.

This was on a postcard sent to my home. I own a licensed hobby kennel and

we do only obedience training with no breeding. I am going to reply as

soon as I cool off.

Hello:

We are a new Pet Store opening in Southern New Jersey in approximately one month. We got your name from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's website and are reaching out to you to see if would be interested in selling some of your puppies to us in the future. Our drive to the Lancaster area us approximately 2 hours so when we do come, would like to purchase as many puppies as possible. Of course we will be buying from different breeders so if you only breed one specific dog that is ok. We need to stay in a low to moderate price range of $150-$225 per pup as when we factor in our overhead expenses such as gas, travel, vet bills, rent, util ities, payroll, etc. we do not have much room for markup.

Especially, since we want to offer competitive pricing.

If you are possibly interested, please give me a call at 856 740 4049 so we can discuss this at a greater length. I would have reached out to you via the phone, but phone numbers were not provided on the website. If I miss your call, kindly leave a message as this is my home number and I would like to utilize it as a contact number until I have a store phone number.

You can also email me at puppies4all@gmail.com Please, only respectable breeders need reply as we do not intend to purchase from kennels in violation of state guidelines. Thank you for taking the time to red this and hopefully we can do business in the near future.

Mr Armstrong:

Please remove my kennel from your mailing list.

I do not support the purchase of puppies and dogs from pet shops. Pet shops are part of the problem we are facing currently in Pa. They support backyard breeders, and puppy mills and the rest of us responsible dog owners have to deal with the fallout these people and people like you leave behind.

No responsible, "respected" ethical breeders that I know would ever wholesale their puppies to a pet shop. That being the case, that leaves the rest who breed purely for financial gain and not out of the love of dogs.

Marketing puppies through a pet store is an outrage. The ones that I have personally dealt with in my training classes have had issues from temperament to severe health issues. I have had to watch children's faces turn sour when their beloved puppy has to be put down due to some problem they inherited from what you refer to as "respectable" breeders.

I am a little more than upset that you have used the Pa. Dept. of Ag. website to supply your business with puppy "fodder". This is not the intention of this website at all. You should be thankful that they did not list our phone numbers for you would have gotten more than an ear full over this scheme of yours.

As a businessman you must realize that paying 150-225 per pup is simply bordering on dishonest. In my particular breed there are hips, elbows, eyes, heart certifications before the dog is even bred. Just the total care of a pup for 7 weeks will exceed what you are offering. Now that being said, how can these "respectable" breeders sell you or anyone else a healthy puppy? The answer is they can't! They get paid, you get paid, and the ignorant dog buying public deals with the problems.

Have you walked through a kill shelter lately? Puppies are so cute but they grow into adults and became unwanted. Ever thought about how many puppies you may have sold wound up in such a place? Have you sat in a vet's office with a family that can't afford to "fix" what you and your "respected" breeders have produced? While the "breeders" can be blamed there is also the issue of enabling this situation in the first place. Do you accept those unwanted dogs back that you sell?

In closing, I don't wish you well at all in your business opening. I know in my heart that there will be a lot of heartache all around if you succeed. Have you ever considered getting a real job? You would be surprised it is not at all that bad.....

I have a dairy farm and also work at our local cattle auction facility. We get alot of Amish & Menonite's that come to the Holstein auctions. If you look there are over 250 kennels listed in the Lancaster County, and most of the names are the Amish/Menonites. I have tried talking with them but they consider dogs just as they do their cattle. They treat horses, cows, and dogs in a different sense and have no intentions of changing. Our only hope is to stamp out pet stores like the above mentioned from being allowed to sell live animals with out tougher restrictions.
