View Full Version : The power of collective prayer

There are one or two of us on this forum who need a miracle right about now... :( can’t say much more except that if any of you believe in the power of prayer... now would be the time.

Well, things are not so good... a very dear friend was waiting on a very special litter... doing ultrasounds from day 58 on... everything was good except that day 63 came and went. On day 64 my friend begged for a C-Section... actually went to her regular vet and to the emergency clinic. “Isn’t warranted” was the response. The ultra sound in the late after noon of day 64 showed strong heart beats. At 11:00 p.m. on day 64 the puppies were fine. By 10:00 a.m. on day 65 they could not find any heart beats... the puppies were dead, which finally “warranted a C-Section.” :( not sure what to say about this... except that in my mind something is "warranted" in response to these vets.

Oooh my GOD!! Are the vets nuts?! You can not leave puppies in that long!!

How is the bitch Elaine?

Man that is heart breaking. I was actually going to email you today to find out if that litter had arrived. My thoughts and prayers are with your friends.:(

I meant to put a frown on the title to my response not a red face.

Elaine

The bitch is okay... but the vets sent her home without antibiotics... get this, an emergency C-Section because of dead puppies and no antibiotics.

I am still a bit worried for my friend... she's been pretty strong through all of this, but it's been hell... she has been on such a roller coaster this past week, I think she is sleep deprived... I suspect that later tonight or tomorrow this will hit her pretty hard.

We seem to be doing our level best to provide comic relief for her around here... my well pump went out today, I’ve burned my hand on some chemical... broke the belt on the riding mower, Almé had my cordless phone in the pond this morning, then she went back and found a turtle... left the little guy by the back door... and on and on...

Taking a photo was not the first thought that came to mind :p

Actually, I thought she had a bone in her mouth... I called her over to give her a kiss, thank heavens she didn't drop the phone in the pond when I called her (I'd still be looking for it :D ) She just came out of the water and trotted over. As she got closer I could see that the "bone" was my phone. No you've gotta ask, why was my phone where she could get it?... must have been when I was talking to Arthur about the broken belt on the lawn mower and I set the phone down... it's always sumpin 'round here. :D:p

Eva and Almé together would surely be funny. I go days before I can find the DVD remote thanks to Eva. I am grateful to not have a pond at this point.:D

I mentioned in the original post to this thread that more than one DSNN poster needed the power of prayer... and a miracle. My friend who lost her litter was one person. :( we were the other.

Though we are not out completely of the woods yet, I’d like to introduce DSNN to the newest member of our family - our little miracle - Last Ruler - foaled Saturday. :)

NO photos, but an update on Last Ruler... so far so good. He is in glowing health, putting on weight, getting stronger every day. He's used to being haltered and led with a soft cotton lead. For those who've not been around foals, trying to get a week-old foal to go the direction you want is a challenge... a bit like trying got corral a school of fish. It really doesn’t matter what we want to do, Last Ruler has “a better plan” and he prefers to go a different direction. The 50 feet from stall to paddock can take half an hour. But he’s getting the idea. :(

We’re supplementing momma... her milk seems to be excellent... I will feel better when we have another week behind us, but so far, all is great. :)We’re hoping Last Ruler goes to England to join his half brother Commander and nephew Cooldanz. Are you listening Cilla? ;)

Hi Elaine
Please send my condolences to your friend on the loss of her litter. I find it hard to believe the stupidity of those vets regarding the C section and not prescribing antibiotics. Makes me just shake my head.

Last Ruler is thriving... knock on wood... :)

He is the sweetest foal we've ever had... the sweetest. I love when I go to put his mom's halter on... and he comes up and stands by me as if to say, "Hey, it's my turn... where's my halter?"

The tiny foal halter is huge on him... even on the smallest settings. I will try to get a photo tomorrow... as a gage of what it will look like in a few weeks.

Here’s a thought that immediately comes to mind, I actually have the guts and the integrity to sign my name to what I write. I am able to identify a relevant point and express it articulately ... and I am able to manage a measure of restrained civility, even when dealing with a moron. I don’t hide like some illiterate child behind a juvenile nom-de-plume. I challenge you to crawl out from under your rock and act with some measure of maturity. Is there something specific that you have stuck in your craw? Or have you even thought your charming post through that far?

As for your assertions and the question: 1. I disagree that "all" who know me share any common opinion on me. I know such an eclectic group of liars, cheats and thugs, they just don’t agree on much; 2. As general rule, I don’t lie or manipulate any more than is absolutely necessary; and, 3. not any time soon.

Well put Elaine. You are being more kind than I could have been with someone who doesn't even have the courage to say who she is. The Internet can be a dangerous breeding ground for this type.
We can all do without her.
Thank you

Last Ruler is two weeks old today. We got these this morning. So far everything is going well. He is strong and healthy... and just about the sweetest little guy you can imagine... full of life... zipping around his paddock with his mom... he is very good about the halter on-and-off routine, but not so good about going the direction we'd all like to go... so he's about on track with all our other foals at his age. Next up is the farrier... that should be fun:p

What a lovely foal. He is really cute :) I think he is doing very well being handled. Many of the foals up this way aren't really handled until it's time to start training under saddle and it's just traumatic for them.

Marty just had his pedicure this morning - he's 10 this summer and it's still an ordeal! The farrier says he's the calmest TB he has on his roster but Marty is such a challenge to hold. He firmly believes that everything is his to chew and nibble, including any part of the farrier that gets within 2 feet of him!

I am exhausted by the time we're done but hey, his toesies look great!!

EeeeK  Our foals will lead, clip, bathe and stand marginally well for the farrier by 6 months at the latest. I can't begin to imagine trying to deal with one that isn't handled early... it would be so traumatic for the foal. And not doing the feet, again  that's like never taking your child to a dentist.

But then, you live in the heart of Maryland TB breeding country, and they raise their babies differently because they are focused on a different market than ours. FWIW, We had Denali up in Monkton back when Arthur was in medical school... and we had friends in Butler. Seattle Slew grew up in the area... and I think Storm Cat was standing there too...... we loved that area... really miss it sometimes. :)

Driving through northern Baltimore County can be a real equine treat! My friend (who bred Marty) used to make spare change breaking the colts. By the time she hit her early 30's, it just didn't make sense anymore - too dangerous. After a time, she worked breezing/exercising them. In fact, Marty's dam was a TB broodmare given to her in exchange for work - the guy said pick a mare out of this subset of the herd. This mare was NEVER broke, rarely handled but had a nice build, big bone and basically a calm temperament. Just don't try to get on her :D

She also bought horses off the track, retooled them to hunter/jumper. Now THAT was a trip. Those guys can be super great pleasure/sport horses but man, it's a challenge to bring them down. It can take months to cool them down.

Horses are huge industry in Maryland. It's great but it's not - so many horses and not enough people looking for pets. Take a look at petfinder, look for horse, anywhere in Maryland. Tons and tons of them. My two ponies were adopted from a local shelter, mostly feral but cute as buttons. Good company for the TB...

P.S. Elaine, I can't figure out how to upload my pony pictures - I'm gonna send them to you

Gott 'em... happy to post them for you ... :) Sonny and Star are adorable.

About the drive in and around Baltimore... we lived in Olney... so most any way we went out our door got us to Monkton... we loved the drive.... :) we used to joke that "all roads lead to Monkton."

Those were wonderful times, back when we were planning our breeding to Lord Sinclair... it was on one of those drives that we chose the name Lord Baltimore for our Pinto Lord Sinclair son. :)

Monkton is a wee bit north of me - I suppose you two dined at the Manor Tavern now and then? I live right on Manor Rd. We turn right out of the drive, head out and end up at the Tavern. We love the fact that we can get a great meal and still be wearing our jeans and paddock boots :p

The Manor Tavern used to be a stable and local lore says that George Washington's horse slept there once :) The old inn across the street, the original Tavern where George Washington had breakfast, was recently renovated and is now a wonderful bed and breakfast right in the heart of Monkton. Yes, we loved the place... if it's the one I'm thinking of... used to get a soup, something green, maybe spinach, maybe asparagus, in a hollowed out loaf of bread... pulled the horse trailer round to the back... the entrance did not face the road... there was a great fireplace... always a nice treat on a Saturday afternoon.

Or was that a different place, and the Manor Tavern was closer to the road... more formal, great hordevores...

Geez, once you hit 80 the memory just ain't what it used to be.:p

Yep, that's the place. Plenty of room to pull in the horse trailer, entrance is in the back of the building. One of our favorite places....

We have dear dear friends up in that area, Steve and Judy, both School Principles... with horses on the side. Love them, loved that area... would move there in a heartbeat, but it is so pricey now... :(

An update on Last Ruler... these were taken this morning... he is now 2 months old... strong and healthy... you can amost see him grow. He's been out with the mares in the big pasture, they all love him. He seems to know he is stunning. He's quite full of himself, which is obvious if you take a close look at the photos. :o

I haven’t had a chance to update you all on Last Ruler… he is thriving, and then some. :p Last Ruler is stunning, extraordinarily athletic… and more of a handful than any foal we’ve ever had.:eek::cool: He seems to know he is very special. He’s bright, with an ego to match, the mares all love him, he’s always the center of attention… a real instigator for all sorts of mischief. The other night J.D. and Judy and their granddaughter came over to see him. They had seen him the day he was born and wanted to see how he’d grown. Last Ruler was in the pasture pulling on the mares halters, trying to lead them around by the cheek strap. He’s a brat, but the mares adore him and put up with whatever he does.

His phenotype and color attract buyers, but key for any horse is the quality of training they receive. We do not want any of our horses to fall into the wrong hands. Any of you who have had horses know that there are over 1001 ways to screw up the training of a horse… and really on a few ways to train correctly. Correct dressage training is a slow and disciplined process that takes years and years and years. There is no better Dressage trainer in North America than Elly Schobel. None!!! Elly started Cooldanz and Commander… she gave each a strong correct foundation that attracted international interest, which was one reason both are now in England.

We have some exciting news about Last Ruler… he is now owned by Ms Elly Schobel. Elly will take him as a future FEI horse for her. We are honored and thrilled beyond words that Last Ruler will be in the expert hands of Ms Schobel. With Elly’s expertise, Last Ruler has the chance to fulfill all the potential of his phenotype and pedigree. There simply is not a better situation for him. :) In the years to come, I will update you on his progress, who knows, we all may be hearing about him in the future, he'll be easy to spot (pun intended):D

He looks like he's up to mischief but those are the smart ones. I've been blessed to own two boys who have that attitude. They're smart, clever and always looking to party and if that party involves rearranging your rider's shirt, hair or butt, so be it!

They're usually the most challenging to train but also the most rewarding and entertaining. I am sure that Last Ruler will not only be a great sport horse but a fun family member as well :)

Elaine

You can see a hint of what he’s like in the look in his eye… he’s a sweet little monster :p ... emphasis on MONSTER... and he’s been running me ragged. :p

Elly is fiercely devoted to her horses… she has trained several stallions. She allows them to be boys, but she is in charge, and they all become devoted to her. Cooldanz loved her and so does her client's Andalusian stallion Oyente, who, under Elly's training is the top Andalusian stallion in the USA (he is PSG/Intermediare 1 - schooling GP). No question, Last Ruler will have met his match with Elly ... and then some. :p But she will love his fire… a competition horse needs that ego, and you can’t put it in… it has to be there from birth. Last Ruler will have rules that he does not have here, I'd like to be a fly on the wall for the first few weeks at Elly's. :D

This is one of my favorite photos of Elly, from back in 2006, schooling Raison d'Etre (her FEI star) with Anne Gribbons. Anne is one of a very few American O judges. Elly is the rider, yes her hair is short, and "no" to the other question some of you might be thinking of asking. :p It is a "great" photo of the horse... a "good" photo of Anne, just not the best photo of Elly, except that her form is excellent. :D

Elaine,
I love your horses!

The picture of Last ruler prancing is perfect tells a lot about him in this one picture.

Yes, his eyes have flair but also his lines are great, and I can see how he holds himself already, of course the coloring and pattern speak out loud.

How lucky all you are to have the connection with such a great trainer. No many people can breed and then have the horse go on to such excellent training.

Please keep posting about all of your four hoofed beauties. I LOVE to see pics and hear stories!

My question is: "Where is that young lady's hat?!?!"

Up in these here parts, you get hollered at your melon goes up unprotected ;)

Of course, I was wearing a helmet when I took one of my worst falls and it didn't do me a bit of good. I hit a fence post face first, gave myself a huge blackeye and wrenched my back when my face stuck to the post and my body flew through the rails! It was a righteous fall (we slipped on wet grass coming out of the jump) and I spent the remainder of the summer on the ground

I have no clue where her hat is... if you notice, even in the Olympics, dressage riders do not wear helmets. I have no clue why they are not required to wear some protection. And if anyone thinks that because dressage horses don't act up... let me find the Youtube video of Salinero running away with Anky.. and her screaming something like "help, help stop him." I'd have to see the video again, but I think she had to run him into a wall to stop him.

Haven't found the one I was looking for .. but this one will do for now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9atisnN7dU

and this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xC9rrdMrQQ (turn the sound off)

or this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZtOD6BxbRo&feature=related

Seems to me that wearing a helmet (and possibly full body armor) would be a good idea... but I don't make the rules. :( Showjumpers and Eventers wear helmets and vests. I suspect that with dressage riders, they wear helmets in practice (which I think Anky has on in that first video clip) but not in competition because it is "tradition." But I am not sure. I suspect some of them would say it's a risk they are willing to take because the helmet is of limited usefulness. They might even mention that Christopher Reeves had on a helmet when he fell. I am not sure.

In fairness, Anky is a multiple Olympic champion and this is much more typical of her superb rides on Salinero. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M10Cet-MawE&feature=related
