I finally have to respond to Cheri McNealy's take on the Code of Ethics. She has her panties in a bunch because the COE is suggestive only, with no teeth for enforcement. Well, how do you think the document got in that shape? Bear with me: this isn't going to be short!

When I was Futurity Director back in the 1990s, the Code of Ethics was a document that was mandatory. There was no suggestion as to how your breeding program should be handled. A member was NOT to breed a bitch before eighteen months and a stud was NOT to be used before one year of age. There was no gray area; it was in very clear, precise black and white language. It was MANDATORY.

Now Cheri, in her infinite wisdom, has accused me of pouring over catalogs so I could nail Linda Hoff who was breeding Ch. Soquel's Distant Thunder again and again and again as a puppy. As if I had nothing to do except worry about what Ms. Hoff was doing. No, in fact, Linda herself literally threw it in everyone's face as if to challenge the Code of Ethics. At least, that is my opinion as a relatively disinterested bystander.

If anyone thinks I'm making this up, get your hands on a copy of the Doberman Quarterly, Fall 1997, part 1. On page 44, there is an in-your-face brag that Thunder's first litter was born on June 14, 1997. Remember that Thunder was born on July 23, 1996. That means he was bred in mid-April when he was not quite eight months old. I was a bit surprised at her audacity at advertising that she had bred Thunder when he was only seven months old, but hey, her breeding was her business.

However, when bitch nominations started showing up on my desk as Futurity Director, I realized that the COE was mandatory and was in a slight quandary as to what to do. I called Ellen Hanley who had been Futurity Director before me. What I told her was that I was uncomfortable because Cheri and Linda had made it clear to anyone who would listen that they no longer considered me "family" and I was now the enemy. Because of this, I didn't want to do anything but knew that I was being put in an untenable position. Ellen told me to call Pat Cornelius who was in charge of Grievances. When I talked with Pat, she told me that I had to file a grievance against not only Linda but anyone else who violated the COE. If I did not, my position was in jeopardy for being derelict in my job.

Further, Pat told me to write up the grievance, make out a check for each violation and submit it to her. I don't think that anyone, especially Cheri, realized that Linda was NOT the only one who violated the policy. In the end I wrote three separate checks. The only one who had anything to say was someone who just wanted to be sure that everyone was being treated equally. She said she knew that she had violated the COE and she was wrong. I really respected her for that. Cheri doesn't mention that in her posts..... she simply states that I was was scouring catalogs to get evidence against Linda and Linda alone.

After I filed the grievances, the only thing that happened was that Linda was told she couldn't enter those puppies in that Futurity year. Nothing more than a slap on the hand for blatant disregard for the rules. After that, the rules were changed from mandatory to suggestions only. And Cheri, in May 1999, submitted 20 letters against me to the DPCA Board via Pat Cornelius. Several Board members told me that, if not all, many of those letters, were from people who had bred to Thunder, had his puppies, were close friends or made statements based on second and third hand information. Cheri has said that there were letters submitted against me. What she doesn't bother to say is that, far as I know, SHE WAS THE ONE THAT SUBMITTED THEM.

Cheri, as usual, had impeccable timing. She knew I was in a body cast and wearing a bone growth stimulator because in April 1999 she saw me at the Sacramento specialty where I could barely move and was in constant pain. Right after that the letters were submitted. When Pat Cornelius originally pursued these letters, I was told that she had filed charges against me. As soon as I asked to see the letters, since according to the DPCA C/BL state that I can have access to any evidence against me, suddenly the charges became "informational." I simply wasn't going to play that game while I was fighting to regain my health, so I wrote David Horton (then President of the DPCA) and I resigned as Futurity Director, ROM Chairman and ROM Coordinator. My husband resigned as Procurement Chairman and I sent over 600 lbs of papers and files to David. It took four people to replace us but Cheri got her wish.

Now Cheri takes great delight in telling people that I was removed from several DPCA committees because of my misuse of information. I was never removed from ANY committee and she damn well knows it. I resigned because I wasn't going to play her power games. All I wanted at that point was to get healthy. And I thought that perhaps she would find others to slice and dice if I was out of the way. Well, as history has proven, she certainly has found many others to denigrate. But she comes back to me on a slow day.

One thing I'll have to admit: every time someone forwards something that Cheri has said about me, it causes a great big grin to cross my face. As she has said, if you're not successful, they ain't talking about you. I take great pride in the fact that Cheri thinks I'm so successful that she constantly has to attempt to take me down. I really don't give a rat's ass what drives Cheri. In my opinion, she is a pathetic person who lives to hurt others. Has anyone noticed how many people she gets involved against. She has an opinion about just about everyone. It doesn't matter if it is her business or not, she makes it her business. Though she saw no reason why Linda should follow the COE, she has no problem chastising others in vitriolic terms because they have deviated from the current document. And she does not see any contradiction in this stance.

I will be responding to other events/statements as Cheri sticks her nose into everyone's business. On of Cheri's favorite statements is, "Do you really want to go there?" Yes, I really do. I have lots of things stored up, printed out and filed. As she decides to spout off, I'll simply go to my files and start pulling things out and posting them. Yes, I really care to go there.

Eve, thank you for posting this. I have often wondered what the backstory was on Cheri's vendetta against you and now it is clear. You made her follow the rules that should only apply to others - not her :p

I think many of us in the fancy who have been targeted by this kind of negative behavior have had quite enough. And even those who have not been direct targets are figuring it out: YOU could be next on the menu!

And when will the DPCA get it? Did it HELP the DPCA to lose hard workers like you and your husband? Did it HELP the DPCA to lose someone like Ann Lanier? So many GOOD people have been driven out of the club or to the point that they maintain membership but will not donate time to the club because of a Cheri vendetta.

I think we're all of us ready to go there. This destructive, divisive behavior needs to stop - for the good of the people involved, for the good of the club and for the good of the breed. While many of us would like to see Cheri just go away, it would be enough if she would just stop it. Just stop already. Enough is enough.
