View Full Version : Baystar's All In The Family

Just thought I'd check in and let you know:

I too have one of those fine puppy bitches from Baystar. (Ch Trotyl De Black Shadow and Ch Baystar's American Woman.) I have been looking at all the puppies in that litter and is is unreal how similar they are.

I live in San Diego. As the crow flies, I am about 15 miles from the border and 15 miles inland from the ocean. Baystar's Laugh In (Moose) and my puppy shared a flight to Portland and then mine came on her own to LAX.

I find it interesting how this litter ended up just about in all four corners of our Nation. We are just missing the Florida sector!

I think I am one of the very few who have a Trotyl puppy in this area.

I took her to a show here when she was 5 months. Cathrine Torries, Michelle Santana's partner saw her and couldn't wait until they too have their Trotyl puppies. She especially was impressed by the short backs of this litter. My puppy was not shown that day. We were there only for practice and I was impressed; she behaved so good.

I have been in Dobermans for some time and actually saw Marienburg's Sun Hawk show! That makes me ancient I guess. But I have stayed a quiet soul. Actually, I was in, then out, then in... I prefer to stay quiet because that's really how you learn more. It is much better to stay anonymous at ring side and you learn and observe so many things!

I found this breed like many others: From showing horses and the horse world. I used to show Appaloosa horses. That really dates me because that goes back to the late 60's. My horse: Thunder's Mohawk Chief was the National Trail Horse for the year in 1969. That was up against open all breed horses. I showed in Western Equatation, Western Pleasure, and English Pleasure. I still have my gear!

I took care of a barn when the trainer was out of town. He had a Doberman. At that time I did not like the breed. I told him that I would watch his horses; but he would have to take his dog with him. Low and behold, I arrived and he left his dog at the barn. There she was waiting at the tack room. She went everywhere with me when I fed and watered. She is the one who actually introduced me to Dobermans.

When this guy came back, I said "Hey...I'd like to have a Doberman, they are nice." But he said, "Forget it, I've got too much going with the horses." "Go look at the dog shows." That's how it came to be that I was there to see Ch Marienburg's Sun Hawk.

I ended up with a Ch Rancho Dobe Storm grand daughter who was a real loo loo. Thank God I had other experience with this breed because with her, I would have given up. This bitch would go nuts and tear through a house wall if given the opportunity. I was really dumped on by a "breeder."

Anyway, I bought this puppy because I owned a litter mate to Ch Marienburg's Dixie Chick. Her name was Minnie Pearls of Marienburg. That was truely the best dog I have ever owned.

Later, in between the Rancho Dobe storm thing, I bred a few litters under the name Perseus. I got so frustrated with trying to find a nice puppy, I just jumped in head first and found one on my own in 1986. But there was no real pedigree there. However, and this is documented, I just put down my last bitch who was 4 months short of 16 years in 06. Almost all of those dogs in that "unknown" line lived to be an average of 15 years. The closest thing that that line was with Tess Hessner's Highbiar. How lucky I was!

I have shown Dobermans in obedience and titled in obedience. I have also shown conformation but not finished in that arena. I had some problems with animal reg at one time and they literally ran me out of town. That made it hard to show. I had more than the "only two" ordinance. I had to leave my home because of this ordinance. So I built my kennels for the time being on the local Indian Reservation where my son and daughter-in-law lived. But I was unable to really do litters there or show.

Angie Monteleon did bred to one of my bitches for a leased litter but I really got nothing to my liking there. So that was the end of my line. I did try and breed that bitch to a few dogs including (R.P.) Ch Marienburg's Repo Man but never got a pregnancy. That is how I ended up with The puppy, Minnie Pearls of Marienburg. (Ch Marienburg's Repo Man x Marienburg's Song of the South.)

I use to work as a social worker but now I am retired and I do not see social work ever returning to me. It is better to not work in an area you do not especially like.

I am not the best of speller. And, I have never posted on a dog forum. I have always been hesitant due to the bashing that goes on. So if you will bear with my spelling errors and not bash me for that, I would be most thankful. I had the opportunity, or forced situation, of living everywhere while a kid growing up and missed a lot of elementary school. So I have this Master's degree but no elementary foundation and it shows in my spelling and math skills.

So that's about it. I choose to write here because there are some others who have littermates to my girl. By the way, I call her Macy. She is so full of herself she sometimes can drive you nuts. Its herding herding herding...She loves to herd!!!

I've chosen the new name of Kissntell since I no longer have any of the old Perseus dogs alive. Time does those types of things to dogs too.

Thank you!

I am a picture nut. However, I can't stack her and get a proper picture. I have to have my neighbor do the camera thing and he is not a picture getting person. I have been recently trying to get a shot of her free standing when she's up on the picnic table. She loves to jump up there via the benches to look over the fence in the distance. She has always been very agile and coordinated and can climb up on anything. She likes to sleep up there as well. I know there is risk re jumping but it is tough to keep her off. That is her perch.

I forgot to mention that I now have my own house again. Only this time I am in a much more favorable area for dogs. I have about 1/3 acre.

I too am into gardening. I have 55 rose bushes. Its way to much! Especially the pruning. And...roses love water and water is something scarce in these areas. I have too many african violets. I have a room in my house dedicated to them. I am mad at them right now!! I have all these exotic strains and guess what they war monger at night. They are cross pollinating and changing their colors. I wish they would stop. But try and tell them that! They just tell me to take care of them; and they set the rules.

I love you yard pictures Elaine.

I have too much yard; but I like it. I have 4 fruitless mulberry trees, 2 orange threes, 1 grapefruit, 1 apple, and an avacado. The Dobermans love to eat this stuff. I have the avacado fenced off because I have heard the leaves are not good for dogs. I use to have plums but guess what happens when dogs eat that...

Its interesting how the dogs get into the trees to eat the fruit. They love apples and oranges. You can not go out there and eat them without sharing them. But there are times when you see them dancing around on their hind legs pulling the fruit off the trees. My apple tree looks like the deer hit it. But there are no deer in the area. I do have a nasty possum out there. He moved in when I went about a year without any dogs.

Anyway, when I get a decent picture of Macy that I would want to put up here I will pass it on.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hey, there is no such thing as too many ROSES!!! :D though fighting the Beetles, the black spot and the powdery mildew can be a pain. I so envy you the fruit trees... I suspect it is just too hot and humid here for apples to thrive... and we have no citrus trees at all. About the photos, it is tricky... most any of us who take photos with a spouse can tell you that there are a lot of verbal commands needed to get the right angle, the right level. the right focus... blah, blah, blah. It takes a while to be able to work aas a team. Early on it's almost grounds for divorce.

Oh are you right re the picture taking. I took some photography classes when I was in high school and use to do horses at horse shows. So I know about angle and distortion.

My partner doesn't know a thing about that. So I have pictures but now they are too far away. And getting him to take pictures is sure enough for a fight.

I am real proud of myself today:

Macy has been not good on lead at all. She is not good at corrections like my past obedience dogs were. I think this started when I took her to the lake, but did not have the proper size choke chain for her. I suspect that my son helped himself to my puppy size chain. I went to pet stores etc. looking for a smaller chain but could not find any. So finally I remembered where I might find one the correct size and just drove the distance there.

That did not work. She was pulling me still all over the place. This was real frustrating for me because the Dobermans I had before were scoring 198 and above in obedience. I could not correct her back. She would just be right back pulling. The normal "correction" of the slack out of the chain self correction meant nothing to her.

She was taking advantage of me because I now have no upper body strength. I got injured at work and lost the strength. So I was just lieing in bed last night thinking of how to train this one out. So I went and found my old obedience equipment. I got the "tuck stick" out. We use those to get our straight sits. I figured if I used that on her front to ease her back that would work. NOT!

So next I said ok...let's see... this is how we did it on the horses. This is how we taught them to back up in obstacles and out of trailers. So let's see if this works...IT DID!

So here's the method:

I used my riding crop. You can hit yourself with it and it really doesn't hurt but it makes a pop. She doesn't like it. She respects it more than my tuck stick. So, I just touched her chest and said, "back" and guess what...she got it. She is now healing like a trooper. She just really did not know what I wanted. Now she does; but instead of heal I will just say "back."

I am so happy to have gotten this today. It is like a major mile stone. We have been working on this from day one with no success. There was always a tight pull. Now she is in the heal position and has found out that the walks can be enjoyable just as well in that position.

I guess everybody has their methods. I learned on horses so I like those methods and they work for me. For me...I can't stand the way at the shows people spray water in their dogs' faces. I can see the hate and dislike on the dogs' face when this happens. The trick to this game...especially in obedience trials, is to have the dog enjoy working. When they have a "smile" on their face, they can do miracles.

I just thought I'd share that info because this is one puppy that had me stumped until today. Now she is a pleasure to work with on lead. She knows what I want and enjoys the walk as well.

Thank You...

I will share what I can when I can.

I find it most interesting what the internet has done with the dog world.

Now with Info Dog, and places like that, we can watch what's going on all over the Country.

We can also see who the judge's tend to put up. I remember sharing info in the old days and the first thing people would ask was, "Who was the judge?"

I keep saying I'm going to start keeping track of who's who, and what they tend to like.

I remember an obedience judge I showed under one time who really surprised me. We always scored in the top. When the awards went out people were looking real strange. I had a totally clean run and was faultless. I think I was fourth or something like that after the faulted dogs. Anyway, this judge told me later that she did not like that I walked too slow for a Doberman and she took off points on me for speed. No one had done that to me before, so it was a real learning experience. This type of information is good too know. Gee...what would I have done in the slow/fast competition area of the class?

But I do admit...Dobermans do show better with a faster pace. Its just that I am short legged.

Did you get the Blue Collar girl??? What's her call name??? I think she stopped in Oregon on her way down to you! I LOVED her! Moose was the Gold collared bitch. Your girl has got REAR, holey moley! Lil Moose wants us to stay in touch! Oh, and for judges the Moose has had: She took Best Puppy and Best in Sweeps at the Regional DPCA Specialty under Jeffrey Helsden, Winners Bitch and BOW under Christie Smith, and Winners Bitch under Alvin Krause. I was really sweatin it, hearing that Ava had already gotten points on the weekend that Moose was at the regionals! Ava's lovely and keeping up with her wins is a chore!:D But, Moose and I are muddling through....:o And Bah, too!:D Now I'm thinking about a Bah and Tungsten BRACE!!!!!:D

Yes I have Blue Collar.

Her call name is Macy.

I have the pictures of the entire litter. John got the no collar bitch. I have to say that this litter was very similiar. They were really quite the same.

Macy has big time attitude. She is the only dog in the house and has taken over the house. She is a dominate bitch by all means! She gives me a work out.

Moose got that too. She's not mean, just VERY dominant/alpha. We have a motto here, "Ain't Skeered!" (Yosemite Sam) And Moose demonstrates it every day! I'm happy I didn't get her when I was a novice! But, WOW, what hard (in a great way) little pups! And smart? Sheesh. She's at that stage where she knows her REAL name is "No...no...not that either...no...hey! Quit that!". And they DON'T back down for anything! Is Macy like that, too?

I tried to put up pictures but I don't know how. So maybe I'll get Elaine's email and send them to her and she can do it. They are not professional ones but they are the best I can do right now.

Ok...I just sent the admin and you a picture of Macy.

Oh my God is this a handful of a bitch! I told Ed that its a good thing she did not go to a Novice home. She is a test of the limits.

I always sit in the recliner. She and Tommy sit on the couch. Well...I tried to sit on the couch and she told me that was only for her and Tommy. But of course I had to change that. But that is how she is. She is not afraid to confront you. You just have to give it back and stay the dominant one.

This is her favorite spot: The picnic table in the back yard. I used to stack her on that when she was little. So she thinks its her's.

Those dog houses in the background are no longer used. I just still have them from the days when I had to keep my dogs on the Indian Reservation. I am glad I have my own house again where animal reg don't come.

I use to live in a "hoitie toitoe" neighborhood. In those types of neighborhoods there is not tolerance for dogs much less Dobermans. So they got me out of there after 17 years on the "only two" ordinance. It was my dog friends that helped move me out of there.

This is something we all have to be careful of. I will never forget that nightmare. Anti dog legislation is some serious business. Thank God, I had the means to protect myself where they couldn't get me on Federal land. They were really coming down hard at the time. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
