Cayenne's littermate just was bred AI 10 days ago. Was taken to get the staples out today and she has a staff skin infection. They would not take the staples out and gave her Clavamox.... Owner is concerned and won't give the antibiotic until she knows it is fine for a possibly pregnant bitch. Could anyone help with this question. This is the first litter for my friend and she is afraid of giving her something she shouldn't have. Her vet was not there and she didn't think the person that helped her was knowledgeable.

I can't give you any advice, but I can share that the equivalent in humans is generally considered safe. Infections are not considered safe in pregnancy.

Amoxicillin; clavulanic acid is classified in FDA pregnancy category B. Animal data reveal no teratogenic effects, however, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. While amoxicillin should be used with caution in pregnancy, penicillins are usually considered safe during pregnancy when clearly needed.

Thank you so much Arthur, I'll pass it on to my friend. She just drove home from Florida with her and was not wanting to give her anything that she wasn't sure of....Or could be harmful for her.

Arthur would know better than I, but I was told Clavamox can cause fading puppy syndrome.

Oh My...... That would be disturbing.... She has e-mailed the vet that did the AI to see what she thinks. Everything happens on the weekends for a dobe When their regular vets are not around..... It is ingrained in them at birth I think. Makes weekends so much more fun in their eyes.....

Boy, don't you hate when as a breeder you have to make decisions like this... I am not a fan of using antibiotics unless absolutely necessary...

Elaine, she doesn't want to use them either. But it has to clear up and then they will take the staples out. Not trusting the guy that filled in for her vet is part of this. So it is a hard Call....

I agree with you and her owner... it's really a shame that there is even a question. Honestly, Arthur is more comfortable with antibiotics... I tend to be a bit more reserved.. though I agree, if she needs them, give them.

Elaine the vet that did the breeding called her told her to use the antibiotics so it doesn't get any worse and that it is a fine antibiotic to use with skin issues and will not hurt the bitch. The Vet was upset that the staples were not removed though, so she will take her to another good vet that we use out here and have them removed tomorrow. She had already started her on the antibiotic when she read Arthur's much appreciated post.

Since the bitch is having a bit of morning tummy issues, things are looking up for her. We are all excited for her....

Thanks for the input on this, it got her on the meds faster.
