Hi Everyone
My Name is Kathleen Banks and I reside in Mt Airy, Md with hubby and my two doberkids.
Kayla is an 8 plus year old red diva we adopted from DAR&E in 2000. Her owners dumped her at shelter because she was being kept locked in bathroom and destroying it.
Dallas was adopted 1 year ago and is 5 years old. He too was adopted from DAR&E. His owners dumped him as they had no time for him. Dallas is a red boy......need I say more? :o
My husband and I have owned dobermans since 1990. We have raised 3 from 8 weeks old (whew) and have had two additional DAR&E rescue's in addition to Kayla and Dallas.
I have been with DAR&E since 2001 after being so darned impressed the with organization I had to be part of it.
My current position in DAR&E in addition to serving on the Board of Directors since 2002 is owner intake coordinator. Sadly, I deal with owners who can no longer keep their dobes for one reason or another.
My additional passion is training which has been most rewarding as well.
Glad to be on board!

Oh Kathleen!

Dealing with people who have mistreated their animals is just the worst. Talking about trying your soul......

Thank you for doing what you do. I am so admiricious!

Hi Ann
I probably have the thickest tongue ever from biting it so much. :)
Its the folks who want to give up their old dobes or sick dobes that make for sleepless nights. Those just touch my heart. And make me angry......sigh......

Welcome Kathleen. I help out with a rescue group in Toronto. I too dread getting a call about an older dobe. I don't understand the mindset of these people who can just "dump" a family member.

Hi Sheila
I feel for all of the dobes whose owners cannot keep them but the older ones
just grab your heart. My last couple dobes we adopted were older.
They were fosters that I couldnt part with :)
One of my boys (Riley) was a chicken killer about to be shot by the chicken's owner and thankfully was brought into rescue. Altho he was very rough around the edges when he arrived he turned into the absolutely most remarkable boy.
Another (Romeo) was older as well with graying muzzle. He was sadly with us only a bit over two weeks. He was being treated for liver disease but was also found to have cancer spread thru out his lungs.
Dallas is around 5 and cannot imagine anyone getting rid of a dog like this.
He is a dream.
It breaks my heart for the dobes when they are uprooted.
Right now we are dealing with so many home foreclosures as the reason folks need to rehome. Strangely many of our calls as well are for very young pups right now.
I am sure so many of the rescues are experiencing home foreclosures and sadly doesnt look like it will get better any time soon.

Welcome to the group and thank you so very much for what you do with the rescues.
Tom and I have had many Dobe rescues in the past and it is most rewarding to see what you get back from them just by providing a little TLC. They are forever grateful I must say.

I agree. I think they somehow know they have been saved and appreciate just being loved.
OTOH my red gal who was adopted at 7 months thinks the world should revolve around her (and it does in the Banks house) lol. But then again she IS a red girl and we all know how they are. lol.
Dallas seems to appreciate all. He wasnt abused, but IMO humbly I think very much attention neglected.
His owner provided his phone number to the shelter he was dumped at I was able to at least get a little background on him. They didnt have time for him.
There were several children in the home and wonder what message dumping the family dog sends to those children?
While I was able to talk to the original owner and told him rescue was taking Dallas(formerly known as Bones) he had no idea which rescue nor that it was me who was actually taking him. He mentioned he thought Dallas would make great puppies............sigh.............
He wanted to come see Dallas, and thats where the conversation began to sour badly.
I think Dallas does appreciate his home and feels secure in that he is loved and this will be his forever home.
