Just a little summary of our shows this past weekend, we all had a wonderful time... our entry was up by about 200 dogs... it was a bit hotter than we would have liked... but otherwise great fun. Best In Show both days was the Brussels Griffon. I will get his name later today... really lovely dog. As always we had a nice entry in Terriers, many of whom are getting ready for Montgomery and all the Terrier National Specialties that week in October. On Saturday Maripi had an Airedale bitch that was absolutely stunning, the kind of dog that makes your heart skip a beat... you simply could not not notice her… she could stop traffic. I believe she may be owned by Matt and Gene… might be Terrydale HK Icepond Spin Again, but I am not sure, we were so mesmerized by her, none of us even looked at the catalog. I believe it was her first show, she won the breed from the classes… Maripi did not show her in the Group (and I did not see what she did on Sunday). This bitch is one of the reasons I love dog shows. She was so good you got goose bumps watching her… doesn’t matter if you aren’t an Airedale aficionado, you could not help but fall in love with her. Can’t wait to see how she does in the future. Linda Pitts got 'punked' in the ring on Sunday... most of ringside was in on it, most were in tears laughing.
AS for the rest of the show, we all had a great time... ring stewarding Saturday was fun as always… loved our judge Cindy Meyer… and the exhibitors provided a few laughs for all of us. One exhibitor (who’s class and breed had already been judged), was standing around ringside. At one point she called the judge over to her and said, “Sweetie, can you keep an eye on that old lady at the front of the line… if she starts to look a little weak come tell me and I’ll take over the dog.”
I almost burst out laughing.
Sunday I judged all the Puppy Groups.... there were a few dogs that really stood out, one or two that will easily finish and possibly do a bit more. I gave a young Doberman male (bred by Carmen Pitts) a Group I (lovely dog, beautifully conditioned, had taken the points both days in the regular classes). Working Group II went to a really nice black Great Dane (square, excellent bone, nice body… and surprisingly well conditioned).
The Border Collie I gave the Puppy Herding Group to was bred by Debbie Giles (who bred, owned and showed Multi BIB Ch SportingField's Clansman ... a Whippet who earned about 50 Best-In-Shows in the early to mid 1990's). When I went to go over Debbie’s Border Collie I just couldn’t help myself… I let out a little “Wow” (maybe two :)) when I felt his forechest, shoulder assembly, tight elbows, beautiful spring of rib… wonderful strong loin, beautiful rear, amazingly well developed well muscled rear… overall the dog’s structure and conditioning were superb. Debbie wanted a photo with me and the dog… while we were taking the photo Debbie told me that she’d bred the dog, that he’d almost taken the breed Sunday over her Special.. and that he might be going to England because breeders there wanted him.
My Puppy Toy Group was very very very nice. Frank Sabella judged Toys and drew a nice entry, so I could hardly have gone wrong with what he sent to the Puppy Group. The Pomeranian I gave the Group to was absolutely stunning and it deservedly went BIS Puppy.
My BIS lineup was an English Setter, a Basenji, a Dobe, a Westie, a Boston Terrier, a Border Collie and the Pom. Dr. Lynn loved the Pom and gave it Best... right as he pointed as a gust of wind came up and started to blow the Pom sideways out of the ring. The Pom's owner had to scoop him up in the nick of time or he might literally have been “Gone with the Wind.” :D
Anyway, it was great fun as dog showing should be… I have our club’s Golf Tournament this morning… and then we can all exhale and start planning again for next year.
and remember, it's never too early to get your Catalog ad in of 2009 :D
