We have this on our adopters list.
onions can be really bad for them. the toxic ingredient
thiosulphate can cause them to become anemic. either a large amount
or cumulative smaller amounts will cause illness. be careful of
foods containing onion-chinese take-out, pizza, etc. best not to
feed table scraps at all, but c'mon! we all do it occasionally! :)
this one suprised me-garlic can be toxic in large amounts. it's
related closely enough to onions that it contains the same
thiosulphates.
macadamia nuts. dogs love nuts! there's an ingredient in them, i
don't even think the exact thing has been discovered yet, but it can
cause locomotive difficulties and muscle weakness. sometimes their
joints will swell.
i also found this list of some other things that dogs shouldn't eat
(some of which are obvious-moldy foods and cigarettes? ewww!):
-Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core
pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning)
-Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
-Rhubarb leaves
-Mouldy/spoiled foods
-Alcohol
-Yeast dough
-Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
-Hops (used in home brewing)
-Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
-Broccoli (in large amounts)
-Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

I tried a new approach with Eva. I feed her absolutely no human food. Well, food that is prepared for me to eat anyway. She sits quietly on the couch while we are eating. I wanted her to not associate my food with her mouth. It worked great!! She never begs. It was hard for me to not share with her though.

I am afraid I am not that disciplined at all :)
My gal has allergies so we prepare her food. Both eat cooked food even tho Dallas doesnt have allergies. All fit for human consumption I may add. My husband tells me at times my two doberkids eat better than he does:)
My two are beggars sadly, but I've no one to blame but myself.

I just don't give Eva anything off of my plate. No treats while I am eating. It worked well. I can eat in peace without Eva trying to steal a bite!:D
Great list by the way. Most people aren't aware of all of it.

We try to use this list of toxic info for our adopters.
We actually have an adopters list that enables all our adopters to share info, brag, commiserate, etc etc and this was shared with our group awhile back and def good info to have.
Never know when your gonna need it.
I must admit I do give my dogs stuff from my plate...sigh.
They know their Momma has a big SUCKER written across her forehead:rolleyes:
These days I am trying to eat very very healthy so at least I can tell myself they are getting healthy food by begging......

Azalea blossoms are also toxic. Nightshade, which grows pretty heavily in my area.
I removed two lovely, very old azaleas from my back yard ( the dogs yard actually!) and gave them to my neighbor up the lane. She was thrilled!!
Anyhow, the first year here I spent several months clearing plant life from the dogs environment and only plant non-toxic plants in the yard.
The ASPCA has a great list and the 1-800 # for Poisen Control. I keep it on my 'fridge.

So sorry, I should have included that azaleas are a member of the rhododendron family.
