My old semi-feral pony, Sonny, left me this evening. Sonny was adopted from a local animal control facility as a company pony for the Thoroughbreds. He was a dear old gentleman estimated to be around 45 years based on teeth and overall condition.

We believe that a child must have given him an apple today. He choked and while we were able to clear the obstruction, he aspirated fluid and was failing fast. Not only was he a geriatric, he also suffered from Cushings Disease and just didn't have enough fight to come back. We let him go peacefully, giving him love and kisses and praise.

He wasn't a big prize winner, we'd only had him several years but he had managed to worm his way into my heart. I'll miss his saucy little face.

In sadness,
Athy

Each life is precious... so sorry for the loss of your beloved Sonny... it seems he had a good long life... and that is a blessing in and of itself.

That is very sweet of you, I like that sentiment.

We adopted Sonny and Star (two teensy feral ponies) from the local humane society four years ago or so. Star is a fat little bay, quite full of himself. Sonny was thin, drooping topline, poochy belly, and an awful coat. Between the worms and the Cushings, he was in rough shape. We cleaned up him, started him on Pergolide and started feeding him the senior pellets and mash. He gained weight and developed a very pretty, steely gray dappled coat.

He never entirely trusted humans although he would allow me to pet him, hug him, give him molasses balls and I eventually was able to get a halter on him for vet care, etc. He would follow me around in the barn or the pasture, looking for a handout so I think he liked me, I guess he thought I was okay.

So hard to believe how quickly you can lose them - or anyone for that matter. Hug your Dobes, your horses, your pals, yourself today, guys. We do need to treasure those moments, they're gone way too soon.
