Congratulations on a great win CaroleAnn!
As Reigny won the breed today, I had to stop and wonder whether it was kosher for the DPCA's current Vice President's dog to be shown and win under the DPCA's current President. Why couldn't team Reigny have sat this show out as to avoid any possible speculation?

A lot of people wondered the same thing........

The concept of avoiding “the impression of impropriety” is tricky… often falling into a gray area of “owner’s discretion.” On the one hand, Reigny is of an age where this is probably her most competitive National, and I can certainly understand why she should be exhibited at the National... she has earned the right to be there... but, on the other, it does give you pause.
In my mind, Reigny is not even remotely the worst example of a dog crossing a gray area; I think the problem will be next year for Jim Briley and all of us who have Trotyl kids that will be of a competitive age for the 2009 National. I know that in the past Jim has asked that we not show our Trotyl kids to him, and we have honored his wishes, but Warkant is entering his prime, and while we may never have a deep pocketed backer to make him a BIS superstar, we certainly would like to see him shown at the 2009 National. We think he is competitive with the best of the best out there in the ring today, but that puts us between a rock and a hard place because Jim is doing the Breed in 2009 and we do not want to make Jim’s once in a lifetime judging assignment the source of controversy.

That's a hard decision Elaine...I can definitely see why you would want him to show.......and am looking forward to seeing Warkant there.....but as you said it will cause a discussion or two

Well since Reigny won at the Regionals and not the Nationals, I firmly believe that she should have sat the Regionals out.
I understand you wanting to show Warkant at the Nationals, but if Jim has asked for Trotyl kids to not be shown, you should respect his wishes. Jim is judging the Regionals, so you would still be able to show your dog at the Nationals.

I understand you wanting to show Warkant at the Nationals, but if Jim has asked for Trotyl kids to not be shown, you should respect his wishes. Jim is judging the Regionals, so you would still be able to show your dog at the Nationals.
I have no doubt that Jim will express his desire with respect to any of Trotyl kids being shown to him, and we will all abide by his wishes (as we have done in the past). My point was not so much about Warkant, and whether or not he goes in the ring at the National, I simply used him as an example.
We would not wish to diminish Jim’s pleasure with a judging assignment by putting a dog in the ring that would make him uncomfortable. And, conversely, we have no intention of wasting money in an entry where we know going in we have absolutely no chance of being considered, we do enough of that with the politics ringside around here --- it gets old.
Jim may indeed not even recognize all Trotyl kids in the ring, but showing some of these Trotyl kids to Jim would be a loose - loose situation. Personally, showing is so expensive these days, we simply have no interest in showing “for exhibition only. ” If Jim didn’t seriously consider a Trotyl offspring simply because he owns Trotyl, I’d have to say, we’d be pissed. And if he did seriously consider using a dog that he owned the sire of, other people would be pissed. It's a loose - loose situation for Jim.
I can see where someone would probably make an issue of it, like they did on Cyberdobes when Martin judged a dog when he owned the sire. Though it is entirely legal by AKC Rules and Regs, and it is done all the time, it really bothers some people. Who needs that kind of aggravation? I am sure Jim will work this all out well in advance, but there is an issue with respect to him judging Trotyl kids, one that he's recognized it in the past. Someone is going to be pissed no matter what he does. Now, I can imagine that Jim might say, “Heck, I was judging the dog, and liked him/her. The placement had nothing to do with Trotyl one-way-or-the-other.” I can see where a judge can sincerely say, “I was simply judging the dogs in my ring, and did not notice who was handling it, who owned it or who bred it.” But many would not believe it. Bottom line, I will leave it all to Jim… and defer to his wishes. Frankly, who wants a win where everyone says, “that should never have happened.” We’ve all seen enough of those wins.
Here’s where things get sticky, a dog is in his prime at about three (give or take), and it is nice for the dog, the owners of the dog and the breed in general to see the dog in his prime. That may or may not coincide with someone connected to the dog accepting a judging assignment. I have no problem with Reigny being shown at the 2008 National. It’s my understanding that the reason she was not shown in 2007 was because Tony was judging the National. I think that Reigny’s people handled both 2007 and 2008 correctly.
Personally, I think the gray area arises when a breeder sells a puppy they’ve bred as show quality, and later judges this dog, giving it the points or the Breed. Sylvia Hammarstrom of Skansen Kennel has done this over the years. Without too much trouble you can find published win photos of her putting up a Skansen Giant…you could probably look at Infodog.com for her judging record and see where she’s done this. It is entirely within the AKC’s Rules and Regs for Sylvia to put up dogs she’s bred and sold as show quality. I really have no bone with Sylvia, but I can see where one could say that allowing this sort of thing pushes the limits of what should be allowed.
But I see nothing questionable about showing Reigny at the National in 2008.
