Hey! Has anyone heard about a new class that will be offered at AKC shows beginning in January? This is what I heard.
The Amateur-Owner-Handler class will be an optional class effective January 1, 2009 It will be for dogs that are at least six months of age that are not champions. Dogs must be handled in the class by the registered owner of the dog and is limited to exhibitors who have not, at any point in time, been a professional dog handler, AKC approved conformation judge, or employed as an assistant to a professional handler (effective January 1, 2009) (optional class). Anyone know for sure if this is for real or is this just wishful thinking??

I have heard about it from multiple people, so I am leaning towards it being real. I think it'll be interesting.. that will be alot of classes, including the novice class.
When I do online entry today or tomorrow for January shows, I will see if it's listed as a optional class and report back.

I just spoke with Tina Yuhl with the AKC’s Show Department. I read her Tina’s post above, Ms. Yuhl says "you’ve got it right." The info is on the AKC website under Board Minutes. Ms. Yuhl added that not all clubs will offer the class, but if they do, the winner of the class competes in Winners.
Sounds like fun… also sounds like we'd be painting a big bull's eye on our backs for simply being in this class, but for most of us, I think it’s pretty obvious that we're amateurs just from the way we show our dogs… :p though I did BEAT Phil in Bred-by on the Tarheel once. Scarred him right out of the ring. Go ahead, ask him. :D

I don't know if it would be a blessing or a curse to use this new class.....the high point would be getting another look in winners, but don't you think a face judge is going to keep putting up the faces anyway? If the class had a discounted rate it would be nice to bring puppies in with it for practice at least.

I saw that it is being offered at the Palm Springs shows which are majors.
They have omitted the Novice class in place of the amateur.
Here's a thought:
1. It tells judges who is not a professional if they don't know already. That may tell them not to pick you. Judges want to pick a dog of which others would agree because they don't want to be seen as to out of touch in order to get their future assignments. Funny how when others win there is always backtalk. Its just fine to be beat, but don't dare beat them.
2. It may encourage owner handlers since bred by got taken over by professionals. It originally was meant for the breeders.
3. This is the biggest one I see. The judges may be more lienient in allowing the person time to stack up their dogs. I have found that when the judge makes their initial pass if you are not ready, you just plain don't get judged. That puts pressure on the amateur and makes them fail. Ready or not ready you will or will not get judged otherwise.
Just my thoughts.

Of all of us, you least belong in the class. I see it as more for Old Farts like me, Betty and E2... and maybe Andy... our DSNN Poster Boy... who seems to have gone missing lately. Hope he is all right.
After the AKC Trail Board out in Portland in 1992 (or whatever year that was) we used to joke that there should be the “Changed In Appearance By Artificial Means” class… and then there should be the “Bribe, Cheat, Sleep with the Judge and/or Steal The Win” class, but we had to concede we already had those classes at most shows. :p:rolleyes:

Interesting. The Novice class was omitted at the Palm Springs shows. So is Novice still alive or dead? No one went in there that's the shame.
And, I think that the amatuer class will go the same way. I spoke with someone who has been owner handling for some time (going nowhere) and she said she did not want to try it. I met here in 91 when she was starting out owner handling. She has been showing on and on and has only put one point on one dog since all that time. She's bred to some top dogs too.
How do all these judges keep up on who is and who is not? I think they are not brave enough to pick anything of which there could be controversy. So that's what people want to avoid, putting a sign on themselves that says, I'm a nobody."

"“Changed In Appearance By Artificial Means class… and Bribe, Cheat, Sleep with the Judge and/or Steal The Win” class"
I thought that was the definition of the prfessional handlers class:eek:... but you missed the "drops huge quantities of bait at the corner of the down and back so the next in line loses her lil puppy mind class and leaves the dobe digest open to your dog's page on the stewards table class" info in the definition. How about renaming it the "Subtle like a hand grenade in a barrel of oatmeal class" (quote from Foghorn Leghorn):p
I guess it still ends up that "A rose by any other name...is named WRONG!!!"

I absolutely refuse to enter this class. The judges see me as a professional. They just think I show other breeds and am new to dobes!:D:D
I have been concentrating my time on getting this business together Elaine. They also blocked this forum at work so I can no longer spend my lunch posting on here.

How rude!!!
In any event, it's great to hear from you... E2 was just commenting on how much she missed you, and I agreed. :)

I too thought it to be rude of them to block this glorius forum. They block some forums before I even have a chance to waste company time on them though.

There is a little know thing amongst the teams in my Co. called Black Ops. If one ventures outside of the guidleines, a flag goes out to our personal file (there is one for EVERY one of the employees) or directly to a Black Ops person who digs into it and then moves it along to the appropriate individual for further investigation and accountability.
Some of us have cleared access to certian things so we can investigate others...but over all...they are protecting themsleves from the inevitable issue of kiddie porn, time clock theft and all kinds of bizarre and inappropriate things some employees do.
Until they have Salvino sitting in front of them, they have no clue that the Co. knew what was up until that moment.
Always remember, Big Brother is watching.

Which reminds me:
I used to have these civilian jobs which prohibited you using the internet. That made it real hard to work. All they wanted you to do was work and use their own system clinicomp etc.
Well, when I went to work for the USN they allowed you to have free roam but prohibitted you use any yahoo web mail or visit porno sites. They read all email going and coming and did not want security breeched via off site web mail. They watch what each person looked at as you logged on with a password.
So these young Navy guys decided to look at porno and all the likes. They got found out and got busted a rank. Once that happens you might as well drop your career in the military. So the moral of the story is they watch and want all the time spent on your work. We are considered work horses. But blantantly looking at porno was quite the test. Dumb kids!

I would agree! Pretty dumb!
They are just a distant memory in my CO. once it happens.....you may see them, but they are just a Halogram until they come for them.
There are no second chances once they wade into that world.

A gentleman at work was acutally a part of the real Black Ops. He has been on the history channel and had a book written about him with his codename. He used to be one bad SOB. He now unfortunately has a degenerative disease of the cervical discs in his back. He can barely walk now. The gov't he proudly served will not grant him disability. Sad. He is always in a haze of painkillers.
