Maybe you do get to see it everyday since it happened two days in a row. I was there Sat. to see for my self, a very pretty boy indeed. Congratulations to Jim, Nancy and Kelly. My girl Ava went reserve to the major, the judge said it was ours until the last down and back when I couldn't get her to keep her feet on the ground. Such are the trials and tribulations of a one year and one day old puppy. :)

But doing it yourself that is still a great accomplishment John, congrats on the reserve!

I second CaroleAnn's comment!! A major reserve on a puppy, owner handled, is still a great win! Congrats John! Ava is beautiful and when she realizes it, you're gonna have a blast!

The jury is still out on the red puppy and for reasons I won't go into here it could be quite some time before we really know. She is very sweet , out going and promising. Ava on the other hand is really coming into her own. She hadn't been shown since the national and she was barely 9 months old in the 9-12 class and won best 9-12 3 out of 4 times. Since then she has slowed down in growing and has begun to mussle up and develop. I don't have any recent photos because its REALLY (I'd like to use a very different descriptive word) cold and snowy in New England but I'll send them along as I get them. Thanks for the interest.

I checked for synonyms for “REALLY cold in New England.” There are none. :D Having spent winters in PA and NY... I get it. It's frickin cold!

Ahh....What Cha Mean Its Cold????
I don't get it...Its sooo cold here why you just have to sit on the patio with a glass of wine at night.
All kidding aside...82 today. Gee...for once I'm glad I'm not in Montana anymore.
Now to showing dogs...I'm glad to see you're doing it yourself with the handling John. I think this could be good for everybody.
Guess what...
I plan on doing the owner handling coming up too. It was nice to put a handler on Macy in order to compare her to her mates; but, I've worked her so much that I pretty much know all her whilms.
As to the staying on the ground...sometimes she's good and sometimes not. This upcoming show for me will have 3 shows in the same day. One Futurity and then two regular shows in the 12 to 18 mo class of course. So maybe she'll get tired. After that Saturday and Sunday is all breed. Maybe get tired??
This bitch never wears out.
But then she's out running outside in the warm!! She was actually panting today...ha! Such a life for a Canadian girl!

Congrads to Kelly's puppy. I am on the opposite coast so I don't get to see much of your dogs.
That's not the Left Coast, or the West Coast...But the BEST coast!

Glad to hear your going to give it a shot yourself, it's really meaningful when you do it yourself. Not to mention a lot cheater! :)

Cheater or cheaper...
I sure don't think an owner handler can be "cheater." But then there are some I guess that get real savy.
Funny how things can be miss typed.
Anyway, lets see what 4 shows and a Futurity bring owner handled.
Actually, I was surprised when I got back into the dog show world and found that prices had went up so much for a handler.
I have a feeling that the handlers have priced themselves out with this recession and thus we may be seeing more owner handlers. This could be a good thing for the dog show world. I'd love to see that change.
More people would thus show their dogs. Entrys are way down compared to the early 90's when I was out there big time. I've heard it said more than once that just the elite few are allowed to win. So many people gave up.
I haven't quit in dogs. I just had a puppy I bought for show become ill with a genetic disease so I did the right thing and spayed a gorgous bitch.

It will be interesting to see if the economy has more than a ripple effect on dog shows. Short term it may make things a lot more intense if handlers are chasing wins / income at fewer shows. It could be a bloodbath... we may need paramedics standing by ringside. :D

I know that many people do not show their dogs because of all the pro handlers. In the sense that they are expensive and are hard to beat because some judges judge the handler and not the dog. I would love to see more people who own their dog out there!

Yes, definitely meant cheaper. As time has gone by I've learned to be very picky about who I'll show to when handling myself. I still make mistakes on some judges but it's part of the learning process. The Doberman ring as a whole tends to be more political than most breeds and even if you have a very nice specimen many judges will give it to a long time handler if they have something close to the same quality. You have to keep in mind that many judges used to be handlers. I have to admit though it's a real rush when you do it yourself.

The piece I hate the worst, in showing myself, is the judge who never even looks at, or goes over my dog. There are judges so pro handler it works this way.
I almost feel like I would like to bring that up to the show committee. I have paid my entry fee and deserve to have the judge at least go over my dog. It is quite insulting and you definately know the issue.
In fact, I'll take it one step further. I have shown my dog myself and turned around another time and used a handler with the SAME JUDGE.
Well when myself, the judge didn't care to even look. Same judge with handler totally different look over.
What's up with that?
I've had about enough of this crap and now that I'm older...
My entry and my drive plus expense of getting to the show etc. is worth more than an ignore.
No wonder the show entries are down. Why burn up money if you have not a chance? Either you have to be made of money or forget spending your hard earned bucks. Don't even enter.
Just the other day, I was told that now the handlers are specifying the amount of tip that they shall get for taking the points. What's happened with showing anyway? Now they tell you how much tip you are supposed to give!
The refreshing part in this is that now some judges, and you have to figure that out yourself, are finally giving some owner handlers a chance.
The real trick to it is to go in and present your dog quickly, and beat the professional at the positioning stacking etc. It has to be quick short and to the point. That is the key. There is not forgiveness for any off time. You do it or don't get looked at. Fast and quick!
That takes hours and hours of practice with your dog. I have put in that time. So then I give it to a handler, to do what I trained the animal to do?
Oh well...thanks for the rant.
