To love for the sake of being loved is human
but to love for the sake of loving is angelic.
Alphonse de Lamartine
Yesterday was a bit tough… about mid afternoon I got the call from Betty, they were on their way back to the vet’s with Fein Cera. Cera had taken a turn for the worse, this time her creatinine was up over 13. As many of you know, Cera has been transfused twice a day since she was diagnosed in kidney failure last fall. After the initial onslaught of symptoms, Cera rebounded a bit… but we all knew her time was limited. In the months since her diagnosis Cera has had many many good days, her weight was good, her eyes were bright and shiny, her coat sparkled, her heart full of mischief… she had great days, of chasing squirrels, and shredding toys, days of simply loving and being loved by Betty. The bond between Cera and Betty is extraordinary, Betty fought to give Cera each and every healthy day possible, knowing all the while that their time together would be short. No effort or expense was spared, Betty, Bill and their son John put life on hold for Cera. There were times when it was hard to believe that Cera was even sick. Through it all, Cera loved people, she never met a stranger… she’d walk right up to people, bump them with her nose to say “hello” , she loved everyone and touched the lives of all those she met.
Cera was euthanized yesterday afternoon... allowed to slip peacefully away from a body that was failing her. Betty and Bill were with her to the end, just as they have been there for her from the first moment she was diagnosed with kidney failure. It is way too soon to say goodbye to Cera… but I guess angels belong in heaven.
From about mid-morning on I had noticed our old mare Fancy Ruler laying in the pasture… an hour or so after I spoke with Betty I went down to feed the horses. As I approached I could see that Fancy Ruler had passed away, it was almost peaceful. She was buried last night in the corner of the pasture, her two daughters and her granddaughter Lourdess were there to say goodbye. Fancy Ruler was 27 years old … in her long beautiful life she did everything everyone ever asked of her, She was raced as a 2 year-old, they played polo with her… the woman we bought her from - Janice Rende - used to ride Fancy Rule a couple of miles cross country, five days a week. Janice and a partner even won a annual mounted scavenger race on Maryland’s Eastern Shore years ago, riders had to chase down clues on horse back, at one point in the race the horses had to swim out to a platform so the riders could get one of the clues. Fancy Ruler’s team blew the rest of the participants away and won.
We purchased Fancy Ruler in 2003, when she was 21 years old, after we’d seen video of the Breeding Director of the German Oldenburg Verband – Dr. Roland Ramsauer - entering her into the Verband’s Main Mare Book. The German Oldenburg Verband’s Breeding Director thought Fancy Ruler was exceptional, and we agreed. Fancy Ruler lives on in her six beautiful sons and daughters. One of her sons - Commander - is in England with John Whittaker. Her grandson Cooldanz is also in England. Another of her sons is with one of the USA’s Para Olympic riders and hopefully will compete for the USA in England in 2012. Fancy Ruler's granddaughter Lourdess is the most extraordinary mare imaginable.
Every day of her beautiful life Fancy Ruler did what was asked of her, in every situation. She was a loving attentive mother and an alpha mare, a source of stability and comfort for our herd. She slipped away with quiet dignity… and as always, with no fuss for anyone.
So, we lost Cera, a precious little angel, taken from us far too soon… and we said goodbye to a grand old mare who lived a long life of dignity. If there is a heaven for all of those we love, maybe Fancy Ruler is there watching over Cera and her brother DeNiro, just as she watched over the gang here.
Need to add: Fein Cera is Logres’ Fein Cera. She was sired by Ch. Trotyl de Black Shadow out of Logres’ Brentina. Cera was whelped July 6, 2007, she was diagnosed in kidney failure last fall. She survived until yesterday because of the unfaltering love and devotion of Betty, John and Bill Price, who went to extraordinary measures to give Cera a wonderful quality of life these past months since her diagnosis. Tissue samples were taken, in the future we intend to provide a full and complete medical history of Fein Cera, in the hopes that others might benefit from Cera’s medical history. Maybe we will all learn something.
