Am I the only doofus in the universe who dremels off half their own fingernails when dremeling nails? On Saturday, DAR&E had a dog wash fundraising and we offered nail trimming as part of the spa experience. I guess I dremeled maybe 7 or 8 dogs. I ended up dremeling off most of my own nails on my left hand!

Anyone have any tips or techniques to prevent this trauma?? I maybe should have worn gloves but that makes it harder to get those little toes out, especially with some of the teensy dogs.

My hands look pretty silly :o

Boy do I know what you mean... I have nicks, divots and scars on most every nail from where the Dremel has slipped... not sure about gloves, maybe wrapping each finger with Duct Tape. :p Btw, have you ever had the cardboard sanding drum split and fly off at 90 miles an hour ... it could take out an eye.:eek:

But what I really hate is the "clutch" button is right where I hold the Dremel... often wonder who designed the Dremel..

I was dremelling the nails of a black pom in a dark room for a friend who was quadrapeligic. Extension cord wrapped around two wall corners for the nearest electrical outlet. Dog in grooming noose....got a visualization yet? Now, picture me, the village idiot saying "gee, I can't see where the nail through all this hair!" But instead of moving the operation into a well lit room, I just leaned closer...yup, you guessed it! My bangs wrapped around the dremel at 15000 rpms, forgot to put the dog down, trying to unplug the cord while balancing on one foot, blood running down my face, trying to hold the spinny part of the dremel, and the horrified quad friend laughing hysterically because the was nothing she could do! Several stitches later, I noticed I had almost completely dremelled my ring finger nail off trying to grab the dremel head. Pffffft! Dings on nails! If you want real results, leave it to a professional...do NOT attempt this at home. It take years of practice to achieve my level of utter ineptitude!!! LOL!

I wear installer's gloves now. I took myself down to bone once a few years ago when my one of my old guys kicked out behind. It is kind of like watching a train wreck. You see it happening and you continue to watch it happen and grind away your flesh.
It took weeks for it to heal.

Installers gloves are for car audio installers. We supply them to our guys in our bays. They are neopreen on top and heavy suede lined fingers tips, fingers and palms.
I am yet to grind through them.....yet being the operative word.

Okay, Brenna you totally have me beat! I guffawed out loud when I read this! I will stop whining about a few scuffed nails now - it could have been waaaaay worse :D

Now that we have graduated from dremelling 101, we will next prepare the syllabus for our 200 level class: why you should NEVER do anal glands with a head cold. The alternate title for this distance course is "why you should always close your mouth when expressing anal glands"...this class to be taught by the vet that did it...eeewwwww....ain't enough mouthwash in the world for that one! LOL

Oh my word. That makes the stomach roil just thinking about it!

Although I do have an alternate - when expressing a horse pimple, be sure to stand well clear of the anticipated pus trajectory! Yeah. I forgot to do that...

You can get the gloves Cheryl was talking about at Lowes I suppose home depot too. They allow for dexterity but offer great protection.
