from my landcruiser forum: http://forum.ih8mud.com/chit-chat-section/283095-going-bad-mother-day.html

I'm sure Elaine can sympathize, and understands why I offered up 'a NC dressage lady' as a resource.

The poster is an upstanding Beagle-loving guy, and can diagnose any Stihl item just by reading its symptoms on the forum. Hope ya'll will send some good furry 4legged thoughts their way... :(

I will send lots of good thoughts to the entire family there - maybe it won't be lymphoma :(

Wow, that guy is certainly a loving man and a devoted husband.

Horses are a passion, which you either have or you don’t. Over the years we’ve seen horses put a lot of stress on relationships if one partner does not have the horse-owning-passion. In this economy, there are people literally giving away very good horses… especially in situations where one spouse didn’t want them to start with.

People always assume that it is the wife that has the horse passion, in our marriage it was Arthur who wanted the first horse, and the second, third, fourth --- eight, ninth and tenth. I love them all, but they were not my idea in the beginning. It is touching to read how much love and effort this man has put into his wife horse passion.

I hope the test come back with something treatable…

Yea, my brother & his wife ran into some rough times cuz he just couldn't see how much his hobby herd was costing 'em, even though they were taking in money halterbreaking young roping horses. They've since downsized without giving up everything, but it's taken a while.

As for the poster: there's a funny thread about how because he came home with another [His] rolling project, he had to unload a semi-load of [Her] hay. :p

Pathogy report was 100% negative.

No Cancer
No Lukemia
No Lymphoma

As I mentioned, he has been off IV since Saturday morning and eating like a pig and drinking like crazy on his own.

He is getting better and 100% improvement since Saturday with the use of the steroids. He is still in a weakened state but he is coming home and can be treated at home for the next 30 days or so. The vet does not want him at the clinic any longer than neccesary since they are still dealing with sick horses. They do not want to expose him to any sick horses so he is staying in ICU.

The official diagnosis is;

EIMHA = Equine Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia

The common known causes are eating a bunch of onions or leaves from red maple trees. We have neither.

She is bringing him home tonight or first thing in the morning.

Mickie and I wish to Thank you all so much for your thoughts and best wishes through this very tough time.

Pacific Crest Equine staff of Dr. K Anez and Dr. D Anez and Dr. Ann never gave up. They ran every test possible and used every resouce avaliable. The staff at UC Davis has been helpful as well. I would like to think that they went above and beyond, but they do this for every client.

To keep the Karma alive, Mickie promises to pose Wizard for a picture with the Land Cruisers when he is 100% recovered and his hair has grown back.

Thanks Again.

Where are these guys located? Is it possible he got into a bunch of that "onion grass" (Guildford grass) somewhere, on a trail ride or maybe even in a hay bale? That stuff can be toxic.

This is Mickie

Thank you all for the Cruiser Carma that brought my Wizard home! Wizard is doing well, and his recovery is going smoothly. Blood tests yesterday have shown additional improvement as now his red blood cells and platelets are in the normal range.

Wizard will continue to get 15ml of Dexium (steroids) in an IM shot once per day (quite the feat for me as I am "needlephobic" anyway), as well as Gastro-Guard and live yeast orally for his tummy (preventative).

In a week, we will check the blood again, and hopefully start the process of reducing the steroid dosage. Once again, thanks to all of you for your good wishes and thoughts as I believe this truly helped all of us make it through the "nightmare" of this illness. Land Cruiser Karma is strong.

The hospital bill for my appendix was 5 figures, and I only stayed 2 nites, no ICU.

The same bag of IV fluids that my agency buys for under $10 cost my insurance $75, with another fee for actually administering them.

The nifty little 'float the balls' pulmonary function game? $150. Coulda bought one at a kiddy store for under $10...

The hospital bill for my appendix was 5 figures,

This thread was originally about a horse. An “Appendix” could refer to and Appendix Quarter Horse … and my mind is total mush at this time of day.. so I read the first part of your line above thinking, “ The bill for her horse was 5 figures!!! Holy crap!!!”

Then it clicked…

obviously the problem is all these damn doctors making all this money hand over fist.

Oh wait, what am I saying here? Arthur’s a doctor... and we ain't rich, not by a long shot. :p Far as I an tell, and E2 could back me up on this, the BIG money these days is in whatever the heck Denise and Hammond do for a living (I think he builds power plants all over the world for a company out of Houston). :p

I haven’t a clue why the $10 bag of fluid ever gets to the point where the patient (or the insurance company ) is paying $75 for it. Regardless of your health insurance plan, that kind of pricing hurts us all in the end. We are all in this together folks, we need to care about the other guy getting ripped off, even if it isn’t impacting us at the moment, it will eventually. We are all in this together.

Actually, what I see a lot of around us here in NC is people that clearly need medical treatment and they are not getting it, for all sorts of reasons. We are (or were) the wealthiest country on earth and people going without needed medical care is simply unacceptable.
