View Full Version : What have you done for a canine, lately?

...One of the very best things about dog people is that we love our dogs, we put the welfare of our dogs before ourselves and before any goal or self-interest. We are part of a very special community of like-minded individuals, competitive at times, but strongly connected by the love we have for these precious creatures.

E's post made me think -- What have I done for a canine lately, especially for the greater good?

Co-workers wife is an LEO (law enforcement officer), stopped by to use the station phone (no cell coverage up here) to make a call. Short version: I reached back to dog friends I haven't seen in several years, in order to find resources to help a 10yo Bouveir who's human will be moving to assisted care, and won't be able to take the dog.

Couple days prior I met a woman & her dog: her family is moving & she thought it would be easier to find lodging w/o any pets. Short version: her Entire Family is staying together, and she has at least 2 resources in case the housing situation doesn't come together.

So, post up: what have You done for a canine lately? Bonus points if it contributes to the Greater Good. (ie: illegal ear cropping = major negative points, anal glands & toenails = maintenance points, pooper scooping = hygiene points, etc).

Great topic.

Not sure if this even remotely qualifies, but we got the neighbor to spay a Beagle/Boxer/Sheppard bitch that they usually have chained in their yard. And, I talked an elderly neighbor out of breeding her 6 year-old Doberman (no health testing). But that isn’t really what we’ve done for “a canine” … it’s more like what we were doing to spare future canines.

I think people like Athy and Kathleen deserve so much credit for their years of hands-on commitment. These fine rescue folks make order out of madness, picking up the pieces for all sorts of ugly and irresponsible human behavior. We are all indebted to them.

Which reminds me, as Kathleen knows, DAR&E has an adorable litter of Doberman puppies in foster. I imagine that the puppies will be rather easy to place, but Mom needs a loving forever home too. She is still very young, she’s been through the mill, and deserves to be loved and adored.

Oh boy, my life goes in a major circle. Nails and teeth (didn't I just do them).
Poop, never ending poop in the yard, just when you think you got it all cleaned up, there's another.:( Really bugs the shit out of me when you go to a dog show and you are walking your dog and there is poop with out a owner! I understand the loose poops, that are next to impossible to pickup, but come on, I do not want to step in it and my dogs always get a look on there faces of I'm not going near that.

Greater Good! I just love to cuddle with them, brush them, lots of hugs! Play.

Do these thing count?!

Momma is only a year old. Sigh.........She is a baby herself.
Be awhile before the babes and Momma are ready as they are less than 2 weeks old.
Momma is a sweetie pie so she will have no problem being placed we hope. She deserves to be spoiled and loved now.
The other side of the coin is this poor baby's own Momma is due to drop a litter in 2-3 weeks. Owners home forclosed, and they still bred. Sigh........
In addition we have a boy coming in with broken leg who had to sit at shelter for 3 days till stray time was up. He will be getting immed attention this am.
We have our sweet Romeo whose HW's were so severe it will be close to 6 months recuperation time.

We are having a rash of challenges, between this litter, our broken leg boy and our heartworm boy. And the fact that we may get the second litter (which we're hopeful so that we can nip this BYB'er in the bud) is looming over our heads too.

We're going to have to gear up some fundraisers soon to cover the expenses. If only we could bottle up that puppy smell, I bet we could sell it for $40 an ounce :D I bet we could raise more than enough for the litter expenses that way!

No one else would take broken leg boy or heart worm boy so, softies that we are, we brought them in. Here is the link to broken leg boy at the shelter: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=13778888

He looks really scared in this photo but he's with us now so we'll get him fixed up and on to his forever home.

Anyway, stay tuned. I'm sure the creative folks on our fundraising group will come up with some real fun stuff to raise money to pay for all this. And I'm telling you, if another one of those Dobe lamps comes up, buy tickets. Those things are gorgeous!!!

I have been researching and worrying constantly about Eva and her torn CCL. I have been working a little over time to cover the costly surgery if we choose to go that route. I will start a new thread in regards to this.

Other than that....daily attention. They love their rubbins. Once daily....that's it. One little rub per dog per day. yeah right.....Joy would be happy with that but not the other three. Joy is happiest lounging on the couch away from the action. Eva and the two crazy shits can't get enough. kiss kiss kiss rub rub rub. They all take their turns. Well sometimes.....ok they don't take turns. I rub one I have to rub the other two and ever so often Joy will get off of her throne to get some too. Then there is the attention they get from my wife and daughter. They are so deprived.....Oh to be a dog.

Recently Bob thought the puppies all needed to learn to sleep with us. Now, Vaako and Emma are always in our bed with us. Vaako loves his babies and plays with them and naps with them.
At night, old boy wants to sleep on his mom's feet and call it a night. Puppies wiggle and lick and nibble...well you all get the picture, right?
So, Bob took up residence for over a week on our sectional in the living room. Every puppy got a rotation on the sofa with him so they could cuddle and sleep out of their crates. Then he let all of them sleep free with him...laying all over him.
They loved it and so did he...he couldn't walk right for a week because his back was trashed, but it was worth it he said.
Adorable!

2 weeks ago I called "The Man" on a woman who left her Aussie in a hot car ( 90 degrees that day ) and went into the market. She left the windows open a crack and he was panting and stressing by the time she walked to the door of the store.
I went in and found her at the produce section browsing the circluar for deals. I told her her dog was in distress from the hot car and that she needed not to leave him in there, take him home and put him in the A/C.
She told me he was fine and to pretty much piss off. Ok...neat.
I walked out and called the PD. They went in and paged her and she was forced to take the dog home. They were prepared to break the window and get him out if they had to. She came out and was furious with me.
What the F' ever!

That is a regular occurance for me... I stalk people in parking lots that are jackasses and tell them how they are killing their dogs in high temps.

You can stalk the dog shows too. Two years ago, a pug or a bully or something along those lines died in an exhibitor's van at the Timonium show. Officials were paging for the person, they never responded and by the time security broke the windows, it was too late.

The parking lot is just one big asphalt desert and the temperatures don't have to get too high before those vans become a death trap.

Bob deserves the BEST DAD IN THE WHOLE WORLD award for going above and beyond.

We used to let the kids all sleep with us. It was fine with just two Dobermans Cartier and Liz...

But once all five were on the bed it was a nightmare. As they grew we simply got pushed out of our own bed. We’d wake up battered and bruised, hanging off each the side of the bed, freezing ('cause the kids were hoggin all the blankets).:D We finaly said, "the bed is ours." :p

It annoys the crap out of me that some people place their bizarre concept of "rudeness" over common sense (and right and wrong). Cars can become ovens in minutes, dogs and children die when left unattended. Who the hell cares if you may have been bit pushy or rude!!! The point was to protect the precious living creatures who could not protect themselves. Saving a life (or preventing injury) trumps, “You hurt my widdo feelings when you pointed out that I am an irresponsible moron.” Someone needs a smack up side the head!!!

I live in the land of entitlement. These soccer moms around here believe they have reproduced and can do whatever to whomever. The dog is just a minor detail to them and if it dies, they will go get another puppy to torture.
Soccer Mom at the market was raging at me....I told her to come see me when the PD wasn't around......it was all good!
Of course, the boys in blue were like, "Ladies please!". I just smiled and went into the market, shopped and hung around in the lot for a bit...waiting...

Bob is ever concerned when I am unattended .:D

So sadly on last nights news in Baltimore was a story of a pit bull pup who had been doused in lighter fluid and set on fire.
A police officer happened to be coming by and got the burning dog to vet.
No one has been caught for this. It was said there were bystanders laughing about the puppy screaming in agony.
This is as sick as it gets.

Been fielding phone calls for Ontario dobe rescue and answering emails for dobes listed on the rescue site. Giving free advice as advertised in my CKC listing and loving on my own dogs and puppies.

I first heard the starfish story in a speech from a boss I greatly respect; sharing it here, to keep the thread going. http://www.all-creatures.org/stories/starfish.html

"One day an old man was walking along the beach. It was low tide, and the sand was littered with thousands of stranded starfish that the water had carried in and then left behind. The man began walking very carefully so as not to step on any of the beautiful creatures. Since the animals still seemed to be alive, he considered picking some of them up and putting them back in the water, where they could resume their lives.

The man knew the starfish would die if left on the beach's dry sand but he reasoned that he could not possibly help them all, so he chose to do nothing and continued walking.
Soon afterward, the man came upon a small child on the beach who was frantically throwing one starfish after another back into the sea. The old man stopped and asked the child, "What are you doing?"

"I'm saving the starfish," the child replied.

"Why waste your time?... There are so many you can't save them all so what does is matter?" argued the man.

Without hesitation, the child picked up another starfish and tossed the starfish back into the water... "It matters to this one," the child explained."

and because I'm a cynic: http://www.emigrant.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=75000

"Starfish stranded on Sligo beach Monday, 09 November 2009
It was estimated that between 20,000 and 50,000 starfish were washed ashore at Lissadell beach in Co. Sligo on Thursday in what Department of the Environment investigators believe was due to the recent storm. The severe weather is thought to have created a tsunami-like wave which picked up the shellfish from the seabed and deposited them on the shore.

The fully-formed starfish were between three and eight inches across."

update: dog I fubard has a furever home, and the one i mention as 'latest dude' now fills a part of my heart, and the greater part of my bed.

my latest contributions: Rowan (in his own thread),

and the pitbull bitch (on a chain where total weight prolly equalled the dogs) whom I distacted from my dog-fearing co-worker, at an OD call last nite, so's the cops wouldn't shoot it.

sadly, that's sumtimes all I can do. :(

A good dust up is good for the soul!

Unfortunately, we have that as well; there's even a special public safety name for it (not for polite, or even dog, company)

An LEO (cop) friend reminded me that road-rage doesn't just happen while driving...

Please think through any interaction you have about someone else's dog: you never know what will set off their trigger, 2 or 4 legged.

Stay safe (but not paranoid = how n da hell do we do that?)

Let me see..
I brought Layla in for an Ultrasound Thursday and she passed with flying colors..
I bought 2 great toys at a nearby Agway. These toys seem to last a while and the kids really love them.
Jaden's nails Friday night and Layla's this morning.
I gave Jessie, our 20 lb Main Coon Cat, a good brushing this morning, hair flying all over the house. Oh, I also cleaned the inside of Angel's cage.
I'm ready for a nap.

^ health test, toys, toes, brushing and cage cleaning: you're way ahead of me. :p

I like to think of my fish as living in a true warm-water environment, sediment and all. The rehomed (due to fire) bela/pela (=faux) shark is shifting through the pleco's leftovers for snax tho, time to clean that house too. :o
