Not sure if you all know this, but Brentina has four brothers. The one we never hear about is “Tag” … Logres You’re It, a fawn male that I always thought resembled Dwight D. Eisenhower. :D :p

Tag has been the beloved companion of Mark and Louise Van Alstyne since he was 12 weeks old. He has all the endearing characteristics of the red males, with a dash of something else, not quite sure what to call it, but he was the largest puppy in the litter, the most active, the most vocal, the most demanding of attention… just “the most”.. a dog that marches to his own drummer. :)

Louise and her husband Mark are dear old friends, dog handlers who retired to become AKC judges, and then went back to handling, because it is what they truly love. Together they have well over 60 years experience owning, breeding and showing dogs, mostly Great Danes, and more BIS than I can count.

I just got this email from Louise… near as I can tell, she is on the road showing… it made me laugh, thought you all might enjoy it too.

Well I came back to my motel after group. Carried everything in, took dogs in as it was hot out and the room is air conditioned. Turned around and went back out for my laptop and dog dishes so I could feed before meeting for dinner. I had two hours. Came back, and my room would not open. Went and got another key, would not work. Went and got anybody who works here. Key would not work. Now mind you Tag is inside the door whining. She called the owner who called for maintenance. He lives two miles away, he could not get it open. Broke the door handle, unscrewed everything. Put new batteries in the door, still no luck. Tag is still crying. Finally I said what would you do if it was a small child. He said break the window. Ok now were getting somewhere. Two and a half hours later, we break window, double window, we break both. Reach in, unlock window, Warning not to fall off ladder, over air conditioner, and assure them I am positive they have wonderful insurance coverage. Louise crawls up ladder and into room, stepping over glass. Dogs are freaked out, now I have a broken door, and a broken window, motel is full for the weekend. Louise wants bottom floor.

Louise gets King suite, on bottom floor and airline miles. They move me, but dogs are still freaked out. My two courageous dogs were hiding on the other side of the bed, laying down, when I crawled thru window. Now they both come running with glee, into broken glass, I screaming to get back, heck, they wanted protection from somebody breaking into their room. After all I must be there to save them. I used to feel secure with them sleeping in my room, little did I know, I was there to give them security. Husband is driving cross country, and phone now has no service. So I can't even call him and whine. So I just had to tell someone.

I don't know why but I was thinking as I read, that Tag must have locked the door from the inside. :D

Great story, enjoyed it.

I thought that too… that somehow it woud turn out that Tag was the guy on the inside, with his tumb on the doorlock.:D:rolleyes:

I think Moose plays a game with Brenna (who has electric car locks that re-set every 10 minutes or so). Moose (inside the car) will lock the car and when the lock unlocks, she will pounce and immediately relock the car. This is “great fun” for the first hour or so, but in the rain, the game gets old after a few hours. :( Moose knows how to open the refrigerator. She once grabbed a cantaloupe from the frig and threw it to Brenna on the couch - who was watching T.V. -saying, “Play Ball?”

funny story, hope the paws heal up quickly.

Pretty sure that hiding is what Lou did the one time we got burgled.

Came home from work, front door slightly open: "oh no, Lou!!". Someone must've followed us home from park after seeing how friendly he was. Rock through back window, unlock back door, close door on Doberman in bedroom so he can urinate in terror on the bed, more than once.

All to move an expensive bicycle in order to pack a non-working VCR into a handy mesh bag after covering it w/a blanket.

idiot druggies!! The dog was worth more than everything else in the place, and it was his first time w/out a work-at-home human.

Then a dober-friend started coming by & rattling doors: Lou learned to be big scary barking dog.

Hmmm? Great to know that Lou came around.

Tag left us at 12 weeks… not sure what happened to his "I'm a Guard Dog" genes. His role model - life partner is a Harlequin Great Dane bitch. Not sure if that explains anything.. but there it is… must be color related. Fawn Dobe + Harle Dane = two total goons.

Round here, no one in their right mind would sneak into our house. If someone somehow got in, they’d regret it. None of our dogs are even the tiniest bit shy about vocalizing that someone does not belong. But most people won’t even get out of their car. It is just simply not an issue. Our dogs are guard dogs. They guard our home and property 24/7. I think it'd be about the same at Bob and Cheryl's, and at Tom and Elaine's ... and at Sheila's... and Betty's... and Brenna's...

Reminds me, I think that there was an AKITA Special who won the breed at the Garden a few years back, who got out of his crate in the hotel room and managed to lock the door from the inside and they had to take it off the hinges or something like that.

Elaine there is no question about Wei being a guard dog<G> She vocalizes more than the other two adults put together and heaven help anyone coming near the yard fence (and that includes anyone who should NOT be on the sidewalk)<G> In the house she guards the property from house to pool house across the street by barking in the kitchen bay window<G>

Wei may have gotten all of the "guard it" genes. Wahajamabah says, "okay, take the computers, cameras, car, and jewely...but leave the snacks, tv and remote. Oprah comes on at four and they are discussing Desserts for a Diva, so you guys need to be gone by then." Tungsten would be all over burglars, Faith would bark ferociously while hiding and quivering under the bed. Moose would stand imposingly in front of the burglar, vocalizing, ever alert, knowing that the robbers are toting HER stuff. So what would she do? Predictably, she would assertively say "THROW IT!!!!" LOL

Vaako and Emma would not allow anyone in and if they got in.....they wouldn't be getting out.
We live on a quiet dirt road and if one of them or both bark, especially at night....we get up and check it out.
At that point whomever it is, should worry about the home owners, not the Dobers. ;)

The puppies all alert and stand their ground if there is a stranger on or near the property. Their parents have schooled them well.
