And of course, Cheryl, you know how I feel about your boy. Fell in love with him when saw the pictures of the puppies the first time and was drooling over him<G> Of course at that time I was looking for a girl but I still felt that magnetic attraction to Feinbrand.

Well, the MCKC shows are over.. had a fabulous time… a few great stories to tell, that have to be private. Got to spend time with some really great dog people… which is what this is all about… and getout.org is off and running. We all get it.

Here are the results from the show... http://www.infodog.com/results/2009115604/2009115604MAP.HTM The Dobe entry was small, Garbo won the breed, but again, did not show well in the Group (she may have pulled off a GrIII, many of the Working Group didn't stay for the Group, but even small as it was, Garbo was clearly not in contention for a Group I). Not sure what's the point of letting judges see her in the Group ring like that... no question that she shows for the latin guy, but he is always on the Boxer in the Group.. so all they are doing is showing her faults to every Group judge in this country.... as though she is just an artificat of a handler... can't see how that is good for Garbo or her pedigree. She is a lovely bitch... if the handler stayed on her in the Group she might do rather well, but as it is... :(

It was interesting to watch the Groups and Best In Show yesterday… we ring stewarded for the judge who did Best, so we sat with her during most of the Groups… lovely lady, very knowledgeable – an All Breed Judge in Australia, had just done the Santa Barbara KC shows. She knew most every dog in the ring and could discuss them intelligently. Didn't seem to give a flying fig about who was on the dog... though she knew everyone. She is well respected around the world. Peter Green and Ken McDermott clearly valued her knowledge and opinions. (Btw, Ken has been asked to do Skyes on the Isle of Skye in 2011, how cool is that for a judging assignment?). Through it all, the crowd had their favorites… the lovely German Sheppard bitch went BIS (the crowd loved the choice)… and one dog ran almost in silence in the BIS ring… very interesting, not entirely sure what that was all about, but maybe things just catch up with people over time.

Have to run up to the airport today, to see a friend off who came in from New Zealand… lovely lovely lovely lady…

We’re still playing with the ads… Brenna just sent a fantastic tutorial which will open doors for what we can do…but we’re waiting on a few photos

Here is a photo Tina sent of Contender that I thought I'd share here just for fun. Not sure what to do with this photo... but even in this photo you can see that the dogs is square, well muscled with good bone... has nice head planes... and is well coupled... with a strong back :D

The Moore County Kennel Club dog show was a blast. It seemed that there were some very good dog people at this show. Bob and Jane Forsyth are great to hang out with. Their knowledge about dogs is unbelievable. Jane has judged some very nice dogs recently and can tell you what she likes or dislikes about many of the top dogs that are being specialed. She was going Best In Show long before I was born. Mrs. Montford from Austrailia is a great all breed judge who was a wealth of knowledge. I worked all day with her on Sunday and then we sat and watched the groups together before she judged Best In Show.

Of course David Kirkland is a member of our club and a fabulous dog man. He judged Terriers and gave Maripi a group two with her Airdale and the Bedlington terrier a group one.

The working group was judged by George Alston"s wife, Mary Ann. I was a bit surprised with this group as there were not many dogs in the group. I agree with my wife about Garbo. I saw Diego move Garbo in the breed ring and he was able to keep her head above the withers when moving, but in the group ring you could tell that she wants to move with her head below the withers. Don't get me wrong, I like the bitch but that act is not going to win the group even with so few breeds represented. Larry Cornelius took a group two with a Portuguese water dog owned by Roy and Barbara Cawley.

Marcelo won the hound group with his lovely Afghan that is a littermate to Phill's Afghan special. The Afghan national is coming up in Penn soon so that should be exciting. Group two went to Ch. Vin-Melcas Master Card, the Norwegian Elk hound that was bred by Pat Trotter and shown by Diana Wilson. All the judges ringside really liked that dog and I think he would have gone Best in Show had he won the hound group. Group three went to a Bloodhound bred and owned by Jill Baker of Albemarle NC and shown by a young man who is a very good handler. I am guessing he is about 12 and very polite and respectful.

I know I am not covering all the groups but the sporting group was very nice. The standard poodle was expertly handled by Chris Manelopoulos who has had a complete makeover since I saw him a few years ago. He is fit! He has really trimmed up and appears to have put on muscle. As I sat that there with my gut hanging over the belt, having just had a chocolate cake donut, I realized I need to get fit too. It hit me like a ton of bricks. BTW, this usually does not happen at a dog show. In fact not one person at the show mentioned the extra weight I've gained. Usually going to a dog show makes me feel skinny as I see the men that can't button their jackets or the women wearing tent like smocks as you hope they stop bending over like that. This was different, Chris sent out a wake-up call to everyone ringside...put down the doughnut! So in addition to a great show that reconnected me to great dog people (people who improve the sport by giving back) I am inspired to get fit and convert some of this spare tire to muscle mass. No more excuses of working long hours and being left with vending machine food secondary to poor planning, I am going to get fit like Chris.

I will be starting a new thread on DSNN as a fitness challenge to other DSNN readers that also want to get fit.

Arthur, after how many nutrtion classes and discussions of the Kreb cycle, and general overall agreement that fitness IS the best policy, and that there is absolutely NO GOOD REASON for us to have a girth that exceeds our inseam (or IQ), I must admit to two general statements for myself:

1. Do as I say, not as I do.

2. EAT RIGHT, STAY FIT, DIE ANYWAY!!!!!

LOL. Go Arthur go. I'm glad you have the proverbial burr under your blanket. Myself, malted milk balls and licorice, microbrewery and greasy burgers have all become integral features in MY life. And Cheryl, don't EVEN bother with what is wrong with this life style!!!:p

Actually, I am hoping there are others out there ready to undergo a transformation. I know Cheryl has a huge fund of knowledge and Phil certainly seems to be on to something. Last tiime I saw Ron he was in really good shape.

I keep thinking that if I could just get fit, Elaine would let me show Warkant.

Hi Elaine,
I haven't posted on here in awhile, But when I say your dog photos I just couldn't help myself. These pictures are awesome!!! Did you take them yourself? Ever time I look at your dogs makes me want them so much. I'm still waiting , not ready yet still have my five golden Retrievers and that is more than enough right now. Hows Contender doing ? I know He is Tina's boy but has he sired any litters?

Thanks for the compliments. :) As always, it was a team effort, starting with beautiful dogs and good cameras. The most recent versions of all the photos, including Quincy, are on the home page of our website. If you click on the photos on our home page you will be taken to the dog's oindividual page to see a larger version of each photo. We took the photos of Warkant and Titus (taken Sunday 9-6-09). E2 took the photo of Quincy (taken on or about 9-11-09). Tina took the photo of Contender (it is a candid shot, taken during the Breed judging at the Bucks Co., PA show in May of 2008, the day that Contender finished). Bob and Cheryl took that spectacular head shot photo of Vaako.

Contender is doing splendidly with Tina. He has matured beautifully. There is a breeding coming up, one which we are very excited about… with an outside bitch. We’ll wait till we have a confirmed pregnancy before we say much more. Warkant is going be bred, to Lil Claire (I believe that litter is entirely spoken for). We may have one or two other breedings in the works, with outside bitches, breedings that we are ecstatic about… but we want to wait till the pregnancies are confirmed and/or until puppies are on the ground.

Vaako sired a beautiful litter for Bob and Cheryl out of their Monty daughter Emma (overall I think the square, good-bone, beautiful head phenotype of Brentina’s boys works very well with the long-bodied, lighter-bone, too refined head of the Monty phenotype). Put another way, as predicted, in the Vaako – Emma breeding, Vaako seemed to add a square frame, great bone and really lovely heads to the lovely shoulder assembly that Emma transmitted down from Dagger through Monty. I believe that a male from that breeding - Tala is still available. Tala is the total package: beautiful dog, great temperament, already well started… the perfect “Doberman Addition” for a family.

Wei has a fantastic litter of four sired by Sheila’s lovely boy Raker. The kids are just starting to hit the show ring up in Canada. We hear great things about them, most recently about Virgi and Flemming. Hopefully they will come down here to the US to be shown, so American breeders can see them.

Brentina is a line-bred Kafka daughter. I can not think of another bitch alive today that has a strong a pedigree, or as strong a bottom line. She was bred to produce and she has spectacularly fulfilled her promise. Her offspring are valuable in breeding programs because of the strengths she brings. We would like another litter from her, we may have found the male … black. no SA bloodlines, but we’re not 100% at this point. So we have potentially a mini-explosion of Dobermans :D… but as always, each dog is an individual. We are all responsible breeders. We each take it one-breeding-at-a-time, one puppy at a time. :)

^ That photo could work as an announcement for his next litter, peering into the litter box...

Or to pimp out his favorite brand of dog food/treats...

Better yet, peering into a stall to announce a new foal!! Pitch your well-bred dobers to the well-heeled horsey crowd... ;)

The photo of Vaako is Bob and Cheryl's (before posting it here, I only had time to add the most basic text, simply to identify him. I always envisioned the photo in something like the following kind of ad (see below) which would have run next to Warkant' s page. We just never got far enough along in the process to finalize what the ad would eventually look like. (After doing this draft we noted that I had typed "PFA" instead of "OFA," that Farm had two "As" instead of one. And, we decided we did not like the word "always". Since I am not savy enough to be using the layers feature of Photoshop, those simple changes meant redoing the entire ad. I simply never got back to it.) Cheryl is handling Vaako in the photo, Bob is behind the lens. I think that with an updated version of Photoshop it could be the background on the Vaako page.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/Vaako-Warkant-draftsm.jpg

Or, Vaako's page could run like this, next to Contender, though the Vaako background would have to be changed to the green, and the text on the Contender ad needed work. With this layout Warkant, Titus and Quincy could have run on the following two-page spread, though I never really figured that out. It depended a bit on Q's photo. One problem is that the order of the photos greatly impacts your impression of the individual dog. It is complicated... and I just wasn't able to pull it together in time for the DD deadline.

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp21/logresfarm/ad-readlg.jpg

People tend to look to find faults rather than looking for virtues. If you put two excellent dogs side by side, people will scan back and forth, comparing the two, looking for faults, rather than focusing on the virtues of each individual dog. That’s one reason to have a blank page of text (or some idiotic graphic) next to the photo of a dog, which is a format we often see in print ads. The blank page (or page of text) prevents a direct comparison of one dog to another.

Also, a skilled photographer with the right handler and the right camera can get a very good photo of even a rather average dog, while a much better dog (with a less skilled handler and less skilled photographer) will not look as good. Some dogs are simply photogenic, while others are not. And some of these latin handlers can pinch, pull and poke a dog until the top-line looks level and you hardly notice the weak loin, excessive second thigh, and hideous croup, until the dog takes a step, which is one reason I like photos of the dog walking into a stack, without have been mauled by the handler. I like photos with the hander so far in front of the dog that he/she is not even in the photo.

All kinds of things can go wrong in an ad: rushing to meet a deadline leads to errors; advertising the wrong photo, or a photo in the wrong setting are problems. Worst of all is when an ad person or the publication distorts a photo. Ads live forever. Outside of the internet and our own websites, there is no way to go back and insert something to say, "This ad was accidently screwed up, go to the website for a more accurate impression of the dog." The wrong ad is never a good thing.

There is no perfect animal. When I look at the photos we take of our dogs I see all sorts of thinks I’d like to improve in the next generation… but I see them in terms of their virtues. My thought is, “If you’ve got a better dog, I’d love to see it. If you’ve got a better litter, I’d love to see it.”

I'm just an average everyday dog people, and when I look at the ads, I see stunning animals, quality of picture is wonderful. I like to look at both dogs and see which one strikes my fancy. I believe you really need to see a dog in people to get the whole picture, its not just about how they look for me. Also its way up on my list!!!! I was wonder what the ad's are for? I have though about maybe subscribing to Dog Digest but it seems a little pricey, especially if its mostly just advertisement for Kennels. I want to learn everything I can about these dogs, not just about who who in the show world!!

the best versions of Vaako's and Contender's ads.. but I forgot to add Vaako's call name and the text about his puppies is not spaced properly... and there's a dash after Tina's email address in the Contender ad, and I forgot to add Kelly Marquis to Contender's ad :(

Hey thanks.. I've been using Photoshop CS2.... waiting on Photoshop CS4 (from a friend) which has features to take me "far beyond the abilities of mortal man." In the meantime I’m stuck with CS4 Tutorials… which are annoying because they either do not discuss what I’m interested in, or they zip through something so fast that I’m constantly saying, “Hey, wait a minute, I need more time to process.” From the tutorials it’s pretty clear that a person can do absolutely anything with the right software. I will never ever ever trust a photo again. The days of using the clone stamp (with all the telltale marks it leaves on the dog) are WAAAAAAAY over.

When all is said and done, we should have a new competition class at AKC shows for "Changed In Appearance By Artificial Means – Photoshop." The exhibitors can simply trot around the ring with their re-touched photos and the dog. The exhibitor with the most altered dog photo wins. :D:p
